Comfort breakfast with barley coffee, cereal rusks and rose jam ❤️
A relaxing moment 🙏
Instant barley coffee is so relayable, I feel almost sorry for people that don't have a tub of it in some kitchen cabinet to find comfort in. Truly a bevarage to warm you up when everything else is not viable.
Update on my barley “coffee” experiment. It’s going really well! How I do it is I toast barley in a pan for about 20 min until nice and dark brown. I grind it up then add 1 Tbsp to 1/2-3/4 cup boiling water and let it steep for 5-10 min. Then I filter out the grain (it’s very good added into my oatmeal).
I never drink it plain, I usually froth up about 1/4 cup milk to add to it as well as 1/2 tsp brown sugar.
Some of my fave additions are vanilla, dark chocolate, and pumpkin and pumpkin spice.
My BIL says it smells just like postum so I guess that means I did it well. I really enjoy the flavour and like drinking it in the mornings to warm me up. Much less sugar than hot chocolate.
Day 3 of the barley “coffee” experiment.
Most important discovery: how to froth milk with a whisk. It is very fun!
This round is good. I am treating it like tea, by steeping it instead of boiling it which just boils all my water away. I can taste more barley (could use more) but it is hot and has a pleasant flavour. Maybe I can steep for 10 min instead of 5 next time.
The main reason for this is I want a hot drink I can have in the mornings with milk in it, that is not full of sugar like hot chocolate. With milk and a dash of cinnamon, this tastes quite sweet though I added none.
Overall: I am well on my way to success!
Do people outside of Italy drink barley coffee?
Barley Coffee
This type of drink, derived from barley roasted coffee substitute is a widely used in the past when the coffee was not economically accessible to all. Depending on the type of powder processing, the barley can be prepared with the coffee maker, as a turkish coffee or can simply be dissolved in water. Nowadays, as there is no more need to use a coffee substitute, this drink is consumed mostly…
