Napanee, May 24 - What might have resulted in a disastrous fire broke out shortly after the noon hour on Monday when a barn at the rear of Harry Balard’s house took fire and was completely destroyed while Caton stables were badly gutted as well as an ice house.
A call was put in at one o’clock and the firemen responded very quickly, but it was some time before the blaze was under control. The firemen did good work and it was through their splendid efforts that other damage was averted. Time after time roofs of nearby buildings were noticed on fire, but these were extinguished quickly. There are a number of frame buildings adjacent and had the fire occurred during the night it is quite probable that a conflagration would have taken place as the buildings are close to the main blocks which face Dundas street,
A. E. Smith went into Mrs. Caton’s barn and brought out the delivery horse and the heat had become so intense that the mane of the horse was singed.
