“It all happened so fast.”
Though he won’t admit it, he had just been scared out of his wits. Not for what they had just witnessed, but because it had been such a close call. Even now, Bucky is trying to make sense of what had happened. The path they had taken, it’s the path they always take on their walk back home. A shortcut, really. Until now, there had never been a problem. Not even the indication that there would ever be one. But it had, and it had his heart pumping. Drumming loud and fast inside of his chest. Brows are tightly knitted together, using a damp rag to try and clean off as much blood as possible from her temple. Left hand is grasping her chin, using it to tilt her head back ever so slightly and make it easier to clean. Albeit, with his hold alone? He’s shaking. Not because what they had seen scared him, but because it had gotten too close to Rebecca. Had anything happened? God, he didn’t want to think of that.
He never would have had it in him to confront their parents. Tell them that something had hurt her badly, or something worse than that.
“I know.” Tone of his voice is normal, casual. Playing it off, not wanting to freak her out even more. He had to be levelheaded, it’s what his father had always taught him. Levelheaded and strong, the one that looks out for the family in every sense of the word. “I don’t…” Trailing off, he draws in a breath and releases her chin. Bucky takes a step back, taking a seat at the edge of the bathtub, fingers running through short hair. “I don’t know what happened back there, Bec.” He hated not knowing, not being able to tell her that she was safe now. Were they safe? Didn’t feel like it. He’s tense, and he has the strangest feeling that they’re being watched. As if that very creature was lurking outside their home, waiting for the perfect moment to strike, for the right time to finally finish the both of them off.
He figures it’s his nerves that are influencing his train of thought. Making him think a bit more grim than what was necessary.
Immediately, he pushes the thought away. Repeating in his head, over and over again, that they were safe. Their parents would be back before nightfall, and nothing would happen then - right? “We shouldn’t tell ‘em.” Suddenly, his voice grows lower. As if worried that somehow, someone was going to overhear them. “They’re gonna call us crazy, Ma’s gonna think we got int’a somethin’ we shouldn’t have and you know Dad. He’s never gonna let us outta this house again.” They were close minded, there wasn’t a single doubt in his mind that they were going to wind up being punished for stating something had attacked them. Something that wasn’t human, nor an animal. “We just won’t take that path ever again.” Sounded like a temporary solution. Or it was just two damn kids, trying to find a way to not relive something, and not get into trouble for something that wasn’t in their control to begin with.
