Allura watched Shiro watch the Black Lion shoot into thesky. Things here on the ground wererisky enough without a Lion giving them away, so although nobody had liked it,they’d agreed that they’d split up and make their approach to theGalra-occupied capitol city on foot and call their lions in.
“We’d better get moving,” Shiro said, knocking her back fromher thoughts. His presence was… welcome, and a problem, and he was simultaneously the last person she wanted to share athree-day hike through a forest with and the only person she could imaginebeing around right now. Shouldering herpack, Allura stood and together they followed a game trail into the denseforest that ran right up to within a kilometer of the city. She was in high spirits; the terrain wasn’tdifficult, she was with someone surely trained in survival skills beyond herlimited set, they were going to launch a major campaign to push the borders ofthe Galra empire back. How hard could itall be?
By nightfall, Allura regretted that thought. She regretted it immensely.
The planet was coming into its winter cycle, apparently;though the days were temperate enough, the nights were bitterly cold, and afterthe first night she awoke in the darkness to see the little fire they’d builthad burned down to bare coals, and that frost had formed on the tips of herhair. She’d barely been able to movewithout doing some slow stretches huddled under her thermal blanket to warm hermuscles. Shiro had insisted on takingthe late watch, but he’d been facing away from her.
Hiking that day had been much less pleasant than the firstday; Allura was tired, sore, and felt the cold from the night hadn’t everreally left her bones. Altea was a warmworld, and the capitol had been almost tropical. Space was cold, sure, but rooms could beclimate-controlled. Here she had to relyon the fire and the thermal blanket and whatever heat surreptitiously gatheringquintessence in her hands could generate.
The second night was worse. Starting out cold only made it worse when she took first watch, suppressing shivers as she watched the darkness around their camp while Shiroslept like the dead. How did he even do that, just fall asleep whenever hewanted? It wasn’t fair. Watching him sleep wasn’t fair. When they traded places, Allura huddled inthe warm patch his body had left behind, and tried not to think about the nextday.
It felt like she’d only just dropped off when she awoke toShiro’s hand – his warm human hand – on her shoulder, shaking her. “Allura?” he whispered, leaning overclose. He had a worry crease on his brow she wanted to soothe away. “Allura, are you okay?”
I’m fine was whatshe wanted to say (even though Shiro’s face being so close to her face made herfeel funny), but Allura found that her jaw was clenched tight, that she’dtightened into a little ball at some point. She was so cold she could only shiver and look at him, hoping herexpression said what she wanted to say. LuckilyShiro – blessed, wonderful, smart Shiro – apparently got the message.
“Hold on,” he murmured. He built up the fire again, then circled behind her and droppeddown. There was a brief moment of iceagainst her back, then she felt his arm drop over her, his hand coveringhers. He was warm – his body was warmand solid against her back, his breath warm against her ear. Allura swallowed. This was good. A good side effect of nearly freezing todeath.
“You were shivering,” he said, and a shiver ran up her spineas if in response. Shiro held hercloser. “Why didn’t you say something?”
Allura found her face had unfrozen. In fact, her cheeks were very warm. “Thought I couldhandle it,” she whispered. Shiro made anoise of amusement.
“Stubborn,” he muttered, but rested his cheek against theside of her head.
"things you always meant to say but never got the chance" and shallura. make me cry.
