In West Hollywood, there was a famous bookstore called Circus of Books that sold gay pornography. Circus of Books (2019) is about Karen and Barry Mason, a nice Jewish couple who balanced their careers as porn distributors while raising their three kids.

This documentary features old people talking about pornography, which is inherently funny. The film follows threads about obscenity laws, AIDS, and Barry and Karen’s reactions when one of their children came out to them as gay. The family parts are the most interesting. There isn’t much that’s particularly surprising about the documentary. You won’t be shocked to know that a store selling physical copies of pornography struggled in the age of the internet.

I used to walk past this store all the time when I lived in LA. It always stood out to me, but I was too shy to go in. Now that I’m older and bolder, I wish I had explored it while I had the chance.

I love me some Tom Jones, and so when Carolyn suggested this one last night, it stuck in my head and … well, here we are!  I’ve only played it once before, back in 2019, so you can’t claim to be bored or burnt out on it, right?  And who doesn’t love Tom Jones???  And (hint, hint) you might prepare yourself for the other one she suggested by Barry Manilow!
