DJ Miss Jaime | A big impact from a little Miss
The move out of the winter months means the evenings are becoming shorter, but you wouldn't notice amongst Brisbane's thriving nightclub scene. After what seems an eternity of miserable, chilly and wet weather, patrons are thawing out and preparing for an epic summer of late nights and loud music. All too familiar with the sounds of the city is local DJ Miss Jaime, who takes to the nightclub scene like a can of RedBull to Jager. Born into a musical household, Jaime Forson admits to getting a head start in her expertise. “My mum is a musician … When I was young I played piano and clarinet, and most of the time my parents surrounded me with quality music ... I guess having such a musical upbringing, paired with having siblings with good taste in music, has gotten me to where I am now, musically wise.” Through the encouragement of her brother-in-law, Jaime has been fascinated with the electronic sound since the age of seventeen. “He was teaching himself to mix, so I watched over his shoulder and my interest grew from there.” Proving a fast learner, Jaime's first gig was at Alhambra nightclub in November '09, shortly after she bought her first set of decks. Inspired by the work of international producers Gui Boratto, Claude Von Stroke and Skream, Jaime describes her sound as playing “everything from minimal, deep house, tech and really driving techno”. Jamie has had residencies at Electric Playground, Melbourne Hotel and Emporium, and held guest spots at Family, Barsoma, the Met, GPO, Bowler Bar, Birdees, Alloneword, Alhambra and Bimbo deluxe (melb). Adding to this already impressive portfolio, Miss Jaime has supported a barrage of international acts including Doctor P (UK), Kazu Kimura (Spain/Japan), Slam (UK), Danny Howells (UK), School of Thought (UK), Coyu (Spain) and Eddie Halliwell (UK). Jaime's passion is clear as she pushes herself harder than ever in preparation for the coming months. A lot of hours of research and practice have been needed with constant offers coming at her from nightclubs and radio shows. She doesn't complain, admitting when not facing deadlines she can “probably get a bit lazy”. As another incentive, her recent collaboration with fellow Brisbane regular, ‘Katie Karma’ has given her another boost, as she confesses “I don't want to let the team down!” After meeting at joint gigs at the Family and Barsoma, Miss Jaime and Katie Karma have joined forces to become ‘Katie K and Miss J’. Setting themselves apart from the scene as the only prominent female DJ duo in Brisbane, their differing musical tastes has proven to be an invaluable benefit to one another’s education and improvement, and their increasing fan base is a testament to this. Jaime acknowledges that a combined effort is still needed to stay on track. “Since teaming up with Katie, we have been working and pushing ourselves really hard ... our work lies in proving our standing in the club scene”. They already have a list of local and interstate gigs lined up, and Jamie even hints that there has been international interest. Jaime is thrilled with the direction her career is heading in, saying she is having an “absolute ball” working with Katie. As for her predictions on the future of ‘Miss Jaime', she remains modest and believes “only time will tell”. To catch Jaime in action, she will be appearing with Katie K at Bowler Bar on September 1st, 2nd and 9th. For further appearances, check out their Facebook page.
