Nothing could keep Marzanna at Blackwing if she didn’t want to be there. So I think their strategy to keep her would have involved making her want to stay.
Priest knows enough to not antagonize her. His methods with her have to be completely different.
If they got her young enough, it could be practically all she’s known. Priest’s story about the ice cream. I just picture a time when she wandered out, and he got her to go back with the promise of ice cream.
I wonder if they could have kept her sedated. Or if that would be interpreted as ‘harm’ and not work.
Also, they would have to keep her knowledge of the world limited. Or downright lie to her about it. She’s been out for years, but still knows next to nothing. She mostly just follows her instincts and the universe takes care of the rest.
Her big complaint about Blackwing is that it’s boring. She’s just confused as to why Ken would want her to go to the boring place again.
She’s actually kind of a rule follower. When Ken finds her she’s completely content to be a leaf flowing in that stream. Probably the most in tune with her destiny. Even in season two she’s reluctant to leave her cell in case she’s not supposed to. Panto has to talk her into it.
The universe has basically been taking care of her all this time, so it kinda makes sense she doesn’t have much of a desire to cross it, she’s just trying to be better for Ken. When Panto asks her what she wants, it’s so plaintive. It’s as if she’s never really thought about it before.
In the end she seems discouraged that her attempts to forge her own path went so badly. She feels like nothing more than an object, a weapon. She goes back to Blackwing.
I do wonder what another season would have brought. If Ken would get her on his side. If she would deny her ‘calling’ entirely, which would effectively make her a normal person. Or if they would try to use her? But they should know that probably wouldn’t work.
I also kind of wonder what would happen if she ever did kill the wrong person. The universe kept her from killing Dirk, but was that just because Dirk was one of its guys too? Or does it generally stop her from killing the wrong people, not just give her hunches on the right ones?
