we have officially started voyager s4, we've got seven of nine now, studio audience claps, but I just wanted to point out
kathy janeway negotiated with the borg
she went out there and negotiated with the borg, this woman is incredible holy shit
her crew was all doubtful and scared and hesitant about it, if that were me I'd do whatever she tells me, no questions asked
if she thinks it's a good idea to lick the warp core or dive head first through a jefferies tube or snort a space anomaly I'd go do it, what is the mortal flesh to the will of a goddess holy fuck what a woman
No sorry I'm not done. You have no choice but to look at Kara and her pain and her survivors guilt and her self-harming behaviour and her depression and anger it's not a joke, it's not pretty, you feel it. There is no love interest there is no shipping to escape to, there's nothing to dilute or distract from her situation. The main motorcycle riding male character is a side character so you never forget who this movie is really about. The second main character is a 13yo girl. This is Kara's movie. She's 23 and "this year is gonna be the best, and that's not a very high bar." This tells the exact story that it's meant to tell and you will watch her as she screams into soundless space. Every victory is another failure and she keeps going. Kara spends almost the full movie some type of drunk or poisoned and still does what is right because she is good even though she's not perfect and she is kind even when she's not nice. She's stumbling through every day and still living somehow and at the end of the movie she decides she might actually try and Supergirl go brrrrr actually
I’m not saying that disliking Supergirl (2026) means being misogynistic. I’m just saying that of fucking course the film about a woman who loses her shit, becomes a hero because her dog is dying, and ends up saving dozens of women and girls who were bought to be (child) brides is heavily criticized.
.... I don't even know what to do with people anymore.
I have not loved similar films in the past, but this did not have those films' problems. It might not have stuck strictly to comic canon, but they should have known that going in since Superman didn't either.
I think people are just so cemented and jaded they are incapable now of seeing a thing for itself. They just keep regurgitating their memory of older thing. Between that and their participating in a review industry born out of finding reasons to hate something, they are incapable of watching things like a human being.
I enjoyed a 'superman' story not on earth. Thought the actress did well. Liked the character stuff overall.
When she flew into space and screamed and there was no sound, the trek part of me was pleased. Highlight, honestly. That and the dialogue about wanting to stay with her parents and die with them.
I think seeing more of her and Kent together could be great. Liked where it ended for that.
So we got PP for a couple of months on a deal and the hubby is catching up on shows. We got to talking about Enterprise and how he had loved it back in the day, but all his friends hated it. They actually said they were pissed that they 'replaced Spock with a woman.'
The thing that gets me is not even the sexism; it's the stupidity. Like, what? What are you even talking about, you absolute weirdos.
The show must build on previous canon that might not be everyone's cup of tea. It is a little in the vein of Enterprise when it comes to the hopeful vibe. Coming out of a dark time; these people are the founders of the next hopeful future.
The lax nature of Holly Hunter's character - I think this makes perfect sense. Being practically eternal, she has the irreverence of a Q. If you were 1,000 years old (give or take) you might have long ago settled into doing whatever you d@mn well pleased too. I definitely would have. Live a little. And it never goes too crazy.
Also, this is a school. She so reminds me of a quirky academic type. Faculty shenanigans.
When villain shows up and reveals more layers to her character, I think she handles that really well.
Speaking of which, I like how the main conflict wound up being pretty well balanced.
I adore Klingon/Jem'Hadar lady. I love her. Her relationship with the chick from Discovery is easily the highlight of the series for me.
The running joke of the Talaxian fur fly.
The Doctor is a delight.
The tribute to Sisko probably made niners cry.
The episode centered on Our Town downright made me cry.
They do precious little with the academy aspect of Starfleet Academy. That might be why I think my favorite episode is 3, where a prank war between the Academy and the War College shows what a series that wasn't 10 episodes a season might look like. School shenanigans.
I wish they had spent a bit more time on the traditional star trek science-thing-of-the-week aspect. In tiny season format, they wind up not even bothering with most episodic stuff and focusing on character moments that normally you would take more time to earn.
Is the show perfect? No. There is a bit of clunk here and there. But it has characters that are genuinely fun to watch and I want to see more of them. At least we get one more season. I truly wish people had given the show an actual chance.
The internet response to shows like this has become pavlovian. The knees stand ready to jerk. It's gotten old and tired and I just don't have time for it anymore. They can all rejoice that the show got cancelled and their miserable butts feel justified. Then they can cry about Tuvix for the nine millionth time. Whatever.
I always think of the description I saw years ago: Self-imposed deadlines don't help me, because I know the person who set them, and they're full of shit.
RIP Anthony Stewart Head, an incredible actor, musician, singer, LGBTQ+ ally and activist, devoted girl dad, and father figure to many of us as we grew up.
the problem with watching buffy the vampire slayer for the first time when you're 13 is that it will fundamentally reshape your brain chemistry to the point where literally all fiction becomes buffy the vampire slayer in different fonts. "watch another show!" you might say, and believe me i have! i promise i've watched many other shows since i was 13. but the problem is that all those other shows as well as films, books, podcasts etc. are simply deviations of buffy the vampire slayer to me. it's the holy text, the primary source. everything else is just commentary.
