On the days when her palms were covered with caustic calluses and her head hung unbearably heavy on her shoulders, Asmira had to think of her mother. One of her earliest memories, covered in a thin layer of fog, fragments scattered in all directions: her own feet, bare and stained from the hot earth, with grains of sand scattered between her toes, soaking her deep in each of their thousand pieces. Her mother walked in front of her, untouched by their chaotic movement, as if the sands were a paved path, a patch of clear sky. Several knives were tucked into her belt, low enough to grab with one swift movement of her hand, yet high enough that she could not reach them. Different shapes, materials and sizes, they glistened in the bright morning sun, and in her possession they looked quite innocent, not unlike tame wild snakes.
