I keep thinking about this absolute masterpiece of a line because I know it's supposed to be a symbolic vision of Frodo's tragedy and the return of the Ring to his shoulders but it also implies that

One, Sam has just stopped at his tracks during a life saving mission to silently admire the shine of Frodo's skin. Two, he has somehow managed to see that moment of his skin turning scarlet under a singular Mordor lamplight that is definitely not shining strong enough for him to be so bewildered about it and three, the guy is just standing there staring at Frodo just pacing there naked and Frodo managed to pace twice before Sam said anything.

Sam, my dear, this is so not the time for this. I beg you to be normal for once but you aren't capable of that.

Sam naming almost half of his thirteenth kids either after Frodo, by Frodo or after Frodo's relatives will never stop taking me out.

FIVE (including Elanor, whom he directly named and Sam wanted to call Frodo anyway). For reference, only two of his kids are named after Sam's own family, and only one — after Rosie's, although you can also include Rose here, which would still make only two.

Both his first-born daughter and his first-born son are named something Frodo-related. His father literally died in beetwen the birth of one of his kids and he named the child after Frodo's cousin who he journeyed with once, leaving Hamfast as a name for a later kid. There's no child named after Farmer Cotton and any of the Cotton brothers but Tomlan, whose name is at their youngest child. But there is a child named after Merry. And Bilbo. And of course Frodo. Even Rose is a name Frodo proposed when choosing one for Elanor.

Like Sam. Not everything has to be about Frodo. Do you know that. Do you want to tell us something.

Love that moment when Frodo Baggins was told he has to go alone on a perilous quest and it's his fate to go alone and for some time he agreed and then he went nope I am taking my boyfriend with me. And everyone was like oh thank god he's taking his boyfriend with him.

The book equivalent of that scene of Frodo being absolutely gay over Sam bringing a box of salt would be that little scene in the Two Towers in which calls Sam he dear hobbit, pauses, decides it's apparently not enough for him to call him and adds another couple adjectives like calling him his dearest hobbit and his friend of friends and yada yada yada. All to tell him a very sad info of not counting food for way back because they might not need it.

Like I understand you want to tell him very important thing about it but do you need to put an ode to Samwise Gamgee in the middle of it. Do you need to be gay about it too.

Frodo wakes from a nightmare to Sam already kneeling by his side, consoling and soothing him lovingly. He shares what the terror was about and comforted by Sam he falls asleep but not before kissing him and then immediately slipping back into sleep.

A thing that truly only struck me very recently about Sam and his life after Frodo sailing (and the contents of the scrapped but very much finished and refined epilogue) is how early he hears the call of the Sea. We don't know it it's the same call of the Sea the elves feel — we don't have enough information to speculate on that, but that is definitely something of a similar nature, since the text is clear: Sam hears the sound of the waves, there, in Bag End as he closes the door, hundreds of miles from the shore.

The epilogue takes place less than twenty years after Frodo's sailing, considering Elanor is fifteen years old when it takes place. Less than two decades, and about five decades before actually he joins Frodo and yet he hears it. Loud and clear. It took elves thousands of years to and the possibility of eternal corruption to feel the urge to sail to Valinor, and yet it took Sam less than twenty years without Frodo to feel the physical manifestation of his longing for him.

It's something that shouldn't happen by any possible means: he's not and elf and Valinor isn't his homeland, there is no danger for him for staying in the Shire and he overall lives his almost perfect, peaceful life, and definitely isn't something that's supposed to happen so soon after the event that caused it in the first place.. There's no tangible Reason for it to happen and it happen the way it did, and yet it is there. And it's so utterly unique and absolutely devastating. Him hearing its call despite having so much left to do and so much people to care for and love. And yet. And yet.

Because he knows it's not his time, but his heart doesn't and neither does the sea.

Imagine missing someone so badly the literal universe pulls you towards him no matter what.
