Barrel hadn’t told Shock about this, but he had confessed it to Lock, who leant him a nicer shirt to wear and told him not to talk too much about his family during the interview and Barrel nodded along. Lock didn’t say much else. Barrel also didn’t tell his parents, because he felt like Wade might get mad at him for not giving a paycheck to him directly.

The truth was Barrel wanted his own money. He wanted to buy cat food. He wanted to buy manga at the Comic Barn. He wanted to save money, maybe, possibly for school one day.

So here he was in a shirt that was a little too big for him, walking to the front desk of Whosits and Whatits.

“Uh, hi, I dropped off an application last week?” he said, approaching the redhead woman at the counter. “And I have an interview today?” All of his sentences were coming out like questions. He swallowed nervously. “Brandon Adamson?”
