svir punching baru for being homophobic...moments in lgbt herstory
the extent to which aminata wishes she was tain hu is insane
WELL. THE BOOK IS CALLED THE TRAITOR BARU CORMORANT.
I love the book I'm reading bc the main character has been given so much power but is still only like 18 or 19 and has confusing bisexual crushes on half the people she meets including the woman who just kind of implied she wants to torture her to death
SD writes women with so much humanity and allows them to rly run the gamut morality speaking and allows them a relationship to their sexuality that's varied and respectfully depicted but they are also sometimes like hehe what if an evil woman was really hot and I'm like thank you so much kind author I do like a hot evil woman
baru's breakthrough that her savant title and individual intelligence is not more meaningful or powerful than centuries of accumulated knowledge. mwah
tain shir is SO cool as a character bc usually characters who are weapons have some kind of authority that wields them who they have a fraught relationship with but tain shir says no. I am a weapon and I wield myself and nobody will stop what I'm going to do here because I recognize no authority. she's so sick
I listened to almost 8 hours of tyrant on the drive up which was SO satisfying. I enjoy tyrant a lot, actually. there's a lot that happens that feels satisfying and baru develops significantly in ways she didn't in monster. the failed lobotomy scene and tain shir's confrontation were both so exciting and presented CHANGES which I felt were desperately needed...
monster was like....it wasn't wheel-spinning bc things WERE happening it was just slower and less productive and sadder and more repetitive. like it makes sense bc of what happened and who baru is as a person but it was a bit of a struggle to read sometimes 😭 but yeah I'm loving tyrant
