Evening prayers at Kaal Bhairav, Basantapur. Blue-hour incense and flickering oil lamps light the crowd as drums and bells echo across the square. The 12-foot Kaal Bhairav—carved from a single stone—depicts a fierce manifestation of Lord Shiva, revered as the god of time and death. Installed here in the 17th century by King Pratap Malla, the shrine remains one of Kathmandu Durbar Square’s most prominent landmarks.
