COLORADO to BLM LAND FOR THE NIGHT
Spent the night on BLM land on the Colorado/Utah border. Unbelievably gorgeous rocky views. We were all alone, save for 2 other cars parked far away and the hum of the highway in the distance. The drive to get here was absolutely bananas. We weren’t sure where we were going to stay tonight, but wandering served us well. Maple loved being able to roam. So did we.
We took a lot o photos when we got to this place. It was just so peaceful and secluded. A perfect warm backdrop and we had to start to get to know this trailer from a photography perspective.
Jason is doing all of the driving right now. He’s practicing for maneuvering around the big cities (Los Angeles, SF, etc) in the coming weeks. I’m doing all of the photography/editing/blogging from the road and minding the dog on the long drives. I usually get carsick but for some reason in this giant truck I’m doing alright. Thank goodness because this is the only time we have to really be still. Even though we’re moving at 80mph. I really have a new found respect for the people that do adventuring for social media as a job/hobby. It is a lot of work, and staging things really annoying and not super realistic. So I’m trying to get natural shots while still enjoying the trip in real life. Hopefully it will get easier and I can stay organized.
Kansas to Colorado
Left Kansas. Getting to Boulder was interesting. There are some strange weather patterns in Colorado. Pretty sure we drove alongside a dust storm. As expected it is really flat…until it’s not. The Rockies spring up into view about 50 miles outside of Denver. What a beautiful sight after seeing nothing but flat for eight hours.
Stayed at the Adventure Lodge on Canyon Road a little west of downtown Boulder. We knew we were in the right place when we saw the Jer Collins/Meridian Line wooden maps hanging in the bathroom and office. Also the guy who checked us in was from New Hampshire! Of course!
This was the first time we unhitched the truck and trailer all by our lonesome. It’s ridiculously easy, we are just being overly cautious about everything since these rigs are all on loan. Parking is getting teeny bit easier. The trailer, because it’s so short, is actually kind of difficult to reverse because it pitches into right angles faster than a longer trailer.
We got to take a shower and do laundry in the A-Lodge facilities, which felt great since our towels needed to be cleaned (we used them all for the thunderstorm leak at HQ). Fairly certain we saw a mountain lion, Maple was woofin’ at something in the middle of the night. I peeked out and saw the eye reflections of some beautiful wild beast. We feel totally safe being in this Basecamp, compared to being in a tent. It’s DEFINITELY going to be tough going back to sleeping on the ground where the only thing between you and the wilderness is a thin sheet of water resistant nylon.
Brainstorm Pop-Up @ Wonder Fair in Lawrence, Kansas
Our little street pop-up at WONDER FAIR was a success, though most people were more interested in the trailer than the prints! Ha! We know this is going to happen everywhere we go. Wonder Fair is a mecca of prints, stationery, and art supplies and we were so grateful we finally got to meet the crew in person. We ended up bringing the prints inside at the end of the day because of wind. We ate at Bon Bon. Kimchi salad really helped the ol’ digestive system, if ya know what I mean. We got to stay at owners Meredith and Paul’s house for the night, though they graciously invited us to stay inside, we stayed in the trailer in their driveway. We still needed to get used to it. We spoke about the political climate of art in Kansas. Paul made Sidewinder’s Fangs. We ate some damn good pizza. It was enlightening and heartwarming to connect with people who understand you, have their feet firmly planted in reality, and wish the same good things for the world. Thank you Meredith and Paul!
