Add some height and space (without doing foundation work)

Your basement does have enough room for guests, but they would be in for a bit of a snug stay.  Don’t worry if your basement isn’t spacious, there are plenty of things you can do when you’re building and decorating to make the basement feel a bit more open. Unfinished ceilings can help add the illusion of height to your basement, and you won’t have to worry about spending money on ceiling tiles. A few well-placed mirrors can also help make a room feel a lot bigger.

Go with warm colors

The lowest level of your home isn’t going to be getting a lot of light, and darkness is one of the main reasons why people are reluctant to have guest suites in the basement. You don’t have to constantly have lights on to make a room feel brighter. Make the room feel bright and inviting by decorating it in warm colors. Light oranges, yellows, and off shades of white and beige can really help add some much needed light to a basement suite.

Make it comfortable

Some people go through all of the work of remodeling and decorating a guest suite in the basement, and then find out the room is too hot, drafty, or even prone to flooding. Protect your new suite and make the rooms more comfortable by doing some construction work. Make sure that the rooms are properly insulated so that it doesn’t get too cold in the winter or too hot during the summer.  Look into tsurumi sump pumps to prevent flooding if you live in a flood prone area.  Taking these precautions before you make the basement open to guests will ensure that they have a comfortable stay.
