Embarrassing Flashback Volume 3: Atlas
Okay, so I may have lied a bit onfacebook, who doesn't every once and a while? In fact, a lot of the flashbacks that I've been doing, though embarrassing, are kind of re-fabricated from cloudy memories. Atlas was not my first full band recording venture, I had tried previously in my room in Anchorage, Alaska to cobble together full sounding songs either from garageband drum loops and closely mic'd practice amps or from badly distorted amateur single-mic recordings that I just can't seem to find right now. Through all those learning process' I came to a time when I first settled into a damp basement in Brookings, South Dakota that I wanted to try to make my acoustic recordings into full-fledged songs.
Now, this house that my father and I moved into with my sister has split up to be used as a house for college kids so the basement was almost supposed to be it's own sort of apartment area separate from the upper part of the house. As I made my way down the unfinished wooden steps (unfinished as in no sort of varnish or carpet, just vaguely sanded wood) I came to a semi-kitchen that only has a sink in it now, across the carpeted family room is where I would later put all my band equipment for the small band I would start later and at the end of that are two rooms, one was my sleeping area and the other an empty room with a ceiling that was taken up by an air conditioning vent. Well, the carpeted room flooded an the 2nd day I was in that house so I moved all my equipment to the empty room, this turned out to be a great setup to have all my equipment in one area, I just needed to bring in my old computer and find some microphones, so that's what I did.
One USB microphone plugged into a decade old Dell later and you have Atlas, I set the drums up in the center of the room with the computer behind me and the microphone on the floor under the throne. I played the drum track to nothing but my own mind, trying to remember the nuances of my 3 chord song, I still managed to get it wrong but I went with it. I then recorded the acoustic guitar, layered many effects over it, recorded one electric guitar, recorded a second electric guitar, and then noodled over some other things on a 4th track. I set my small practice amp to an octave setting and put it in a cooler to get the faux bass track, I then sang some vocals over it. I'd say all in all, it turned out okay for an 18 year old trying to cobble a song together from memory.

I can't get over how crazy talented Alexz Johnson is even after all these years. Her songwriting and that killer voice hook me every single time. So psyched for the sophomore album to get finished and released!
