星野　最近、東京でも再びジャズ喫茶が増えているんですが、そもそもジャズ喫茶とはどこまでがジャズ喫茶なんでしょうね。ジャズが流れていて酒やコーヒーが飲めればジャズ喫茶というわけはないですよね？

菅原　それは必要条件だな。十分条件は、ジャズが主役であるということ。あくまで主役はジャズであって、ジャズを聴いていたら酒やコーヒーが飲みたくなるのがジャズ喫茶。

星野　ああ、それは腑に落ちます。

菅原　タバコが喫えたらもっといい。でも、これからは逆の店が主流になっていくんだろうな。石山さん（修武／菅原さんと親交の深い建築家）に言わせれば、俺や〈BASIE〉はもはや化石らしいし（笑）。

星野　いや、みんな憧れてますから。

菅原　俺なんかSP盤みたいなもんだよ。ただSP盤にはSP盤の魅力があって、例えば当時のグレン・ミラー楽団なんかは、SP盤で聴くとホントに素晴らしい。
