“That can’t be too comfy, let me help!”
“…. I don’t think this helped.”
I imagine Skykids using these as journals of sorts! Part of the cube projects a screen the user can interact with, and the other side can show that input like Ye Olde Overhead Projector.
Basil’s is full of drawings, Diona’s is mostly scientific observations and recipes, Hiero hasn’t started one yet, and Polis…
They don’t care to share theirs.
I just realized I never talk about my ocs here so:
Basil: My main Skykid. Basil’s just vibing, but if you ask about the history of the Sky realm, they’ll answer you. They may not be correct, but they’ll answer you.
Polis: Polis is Basil’s counterpart from the Eternal Wasteland AU. They’re grumpy and always on alert for Krills- and never without their favorite weapon, a broken Firework Staff with jagged chitin on it. It doesn’t shoot fireworks anymore, but it gets the point across.
Diona: Diona’s appearance isn’t quite set yet, unfortunately. She just wants to study nature in peace. She’s often found in the Hidden Forest staring at dark plants, and she HATES when people burn her subjects. She’s already discovered uses for dark plant oils and parts- namely, the spiky bits are great for smacking careless candlerunners.
CHARACTER SHEET
Basil (LEFT):
Pronouns: She/They
Call: Whale
Stance: Arms Crossed
Prop: Horn
Medal: Little Prince Fox
Basil is the protagonist skykid living in Canon Sky. They are friendly and get along with most other skykids, often getting into emote ‘competitions’ with strangers for fun.
They wear the default mask, mohawk hair, Butterfly Catcher’s cape, and Tinkering Chimesmith’s outfit. They also have a small, mostly-healed scar on their nose from their first Eden trip, when they jumped into a broken boat and couldn’t escape.
Basil is incredibly optimistic and sees the best in everyone, even admiring Krills from afar. However, she cannot stand Crabs, and flips them on sight. She is also interested in the history of the Sky Realms, but her information is mostly things she made up in an attempt to explain the world around her. She enjoys exploring all over the realms, and can sometimes be found studying in the Vault’s Archives.
Polis (Middle):
Pronouns: She/They
Call: Crab
Stance: Wide-Legged
Prop: Firework Staff (modified)
Medal: Wasteland Elder
Polis is Basil’s equal from a much harder version of Sky called the Eternal Wasteland. While they are the same fallen star in each realm, Polis is vigilant of danger and ready to pick fights with nearly anything to protect ‘weaker’ skykids.
She wears Fainting Warrior’s mask, The Ultimate Gift of the Wasteland Elder, a dark outfit with black boots and gloves, and a pair of spiky headphones. She also has a small, triangular scar on the bridge of her nose, that just ‘appeared one day’.
Polis is tense and alert from living in the Eternal Wasteland. They live with the Arkivist faction in the Roaring Wasteland as a member of The Knights of Tsadi. While they mostly serve as a guard, they are also trained as a warrior, a scout, and a guide through the Wasteland realms.
Her headphones are made to catch and amplify sounds from long distances, such as krill or crabs. She will not remove them under any circumstance. Her staff is broken, with Krill armor attached to the damaged ends to make a spear. These frequently need to be replaced, as they wear down and break with use in combat. The staff no longer shoots fireworks.
DIONA (Right)
Pronouns: She/Her
Call: Manta
Stance: Shy
Prop: Torch
Medal: Flytrap
Diona is one of Basil’s friends from the canon Sky world. She is interested in studying dark plants and creatures. Most of the time, she can be found deep in Forest, and carries a torch to keep the rain’s effect at bay.
She wears a weasel mask, Slouching Soldier’s hair, the Little Prince asteroid cape, and Light Whisperer’s outfit. Her hands are often freshly scratched and scarred from accidentally dropping her unfinished experiments on them.
While Diona is friendly with Basil, she becomes agitated easily if her work is interrupted. It is easy to land on her List of Perceived Slights- especially where dark plant studies and candles are involved. Careless candlerunners may find themselves blinded by a homemade smoke screen, covered in a crab attractant, or have their light sapped by a Dark Water elixir… just to name a few.
Doesn’t hurt to look back every once in a while.
Important: Basil got some cool new pants!
It was weird, Polis thought, to see Sanctuary so… normal. They hadn’t visited often back in the Wasteland, but from what they remembered the only difference was the ocean around the island was completely clear and clean.
Which, actually- no, okay, THAT was the weird part. They were pretty sure they’d never seen this much ‘safe’ water in their life. And- was that an Elder Manta on the far side of the island? The one thing the Sanctum dreamed of, day and night? If they ever got back to the Wasteland… oh, they’d have some stories to tell.
There was a tug on the hand holding Polis’, and Basil’s cape tips pulled in. Polis did the same, too late realizing she was tilting forward at an angle far too steep for-
“BASILWHATAREYOU- YAAAAGH!!!!”
The deep blue ocean rushed up far too fast, the only noises nearby being Basil’s excited laughter and the wind whistling over Polis’ headphones. Polis braced for impact and the inevitable sapping of their Light when they evened out just as fast, gliding over the waves as if they were clouds.
“Sorry if I scared you.” Basil giggled. “But- Look! I bet this place looks loads different from where you came from!”
Polis shrugged. “I didn’t come here often. Maybe once or twice.”
“Oh.” Basil said, twisting up to land on a beach. “Well… it’s still pretty?”
“Never seen an Elder Manta before.” Polis brushed some water drops from their cape. “How’d you get that one so big?”
“I don’t think… us skykids did anything. Maybe the spirits did?” Basil trailed off, scrambling up onto a large rock. “Maybe he just did it on his own.”
Polis barely restrained themself from facepalming. “That’s… helpful.”
Basil seemed to roll her eyes under her mask. “Your face is helpful!”
“We have the same face- oh, whatever. Where are we going?”
“Light or Candles?” Basil chirped. “I’ll let you pick.”
Of all the inane- “Candles.”
Basil grabbed their hand without so much as a warning. “Someone already burned the crab cave plants, maybe they did the big one!”
“Where I’m from, nobody goes anywhere near a place called Crab Cave.” Polis protested as Basil slid down the stone. They tried to think if they’d visited this part of Wasteland’s Sanctuary at any point in- maybe it was the Manta room? Sure.
“As they should!” Basil chirped. “I’ll flip the crabs!”
Polis suddenly remembered why they didn’t do caves- every sound seemed to repeat four or five times clearly, then faded to garbled noise that got amplified directly into their ears. “Stop that!”
Basil stood from where she’d knelt in the sand, deftly sidestepping and kicking over a charging crab. “What? Calling is fine here.”
Oh yes, the ongoing debate. How to explain if talking would just…? “Not that.” Polis gritted out, covering their headphones. It didn’t help much. “These things. Caves. Echoes. It’s bad. Drives me up a damn wall.” Not to mention I look ridiculous, holding my ears like a scared kid.
“Oh.” Basil bounced back up to them, lowering her voice. “You wanna get out of here, then? We can stay outside, if you want.”
“Please.”
Dumb idea: Polis gets stuck as a chibi and can’t unchibify. Their staff is bigger than them. They gotta ride on Basil’s shoulders for a week and complain the whole time
