I don't know anything about RWBY but I DO like seeing people talk passionately about stuff so, who do you think was the BEST written character in the show/what was the best written thing at all?
My friend.... I admire the enthusiasm and the support, I really do.
But you’re asking way too much to expect from a series written by two white guys. There is no good writing in RWBY.
I guess the only exception is that they do give some characterization to the characters but it’s extremely minimal.
The exceptions as to which character has the best or at least good and consistent writing, well.. it’s a small pool of candidates but they are at least memorable and recognizable.
Qrow Branwen, who has consistent characterization and personality.
Pyhrra Nikos, who is really memorable (RIP)
Nora Valkyrie (her personality is pretty uplifting for the most part)
Lie Ren (the stoic and serious one)
There are probably a few others but I’ve only seen up to like Volume 4 so.... I can’t really tell you who is ‘well-written’.
I think the lack of ‘well written characters’ is due to a few factors.
There are way too many characters.
There is no real ‘arc’ in the story.
lore isn’t given a establishment, it’s all a bit vague (and sometimes you get anime homework)
physical and work limitations
I’ve heard that beyond Season 5 things get really ham-fisted especially with the shipping... essentially people really pushed for Yang and Blake to be a couple and the writers just kinda gave in? At least that’s what I’ve heard in whispers but I’m not personally sure if that’s true or not. I’m not that big on canon shipping and the thing is that fanservice doesn’t actually bother me that much, but if it gets really obvious and in my face, I will complain about it.
Again that’s what I’ve heard on the grapevine so I wouldn’t know until I saw it with my own eyes.
I guess the only things really keeping me engaged with the series is the Rewrites/fanfics, video essays and the stellar fight sequences that are produced in the show. Honestly all fight scenes are decently engaging and sometimes I really like it when they pull a surprise or two on the audience during said fight. After all they are always entertaining to watch.
Everything else is just... wasted potential.
Look not every show is perfect and I don’t expect an animated show about high schoolers becoming monster hunters to be perfect. But I really want this show to at least have a decent story structure. I want to root for the heroes to prevail over their obstacles.
But the moment it threatens to get good it pulls on the breaks at the last moment. It’s just kinda.... disappointing really cause there is so much potential and just seeing the show not reach to the skies as it should really, really breaks my heart.
RWBY is just... underwhelming.
It’s not the worst thing in the world, hell it’s far from it. But it is underwhelming...
