Jainism in Bastar, #Chhattisgarh In Bastar, Maharaj Rajbhushan Maharaj Someshwar Dev (1069 AD to 1110 AD) patronized Jainism in the Chakrakote State. The Jain Sadhus used to reside in the then Chakrakote State. Chindak Nag kings had built many statues of Jain Tirthankaras like Parasnath, Neminath, Adinath etc in Bastar. These statues are found even today in places like Kurushpal, Barsur, Narayanpal, Bodra. Jainism was established in the Odisha region around Bastar since the time of Kharavel, but in Bastar, only the Nagavanshi ruler Someshwar Dev patronized Jainism. No statues or relics of Jainism dating before the 11th century are found in Bastar. Someshwar Dev's kingdom extended beyond Koraput and Jeypore. This region was ruled by his feudatory Chandraditya. Someshvaradeva gave full patronage and support to the Jainism which was prevalent in the region in the past. The old idols of Jain Tirthankaras and the Jinalaya in the Jeypore-Koraput area near Bastar are still found in a safe state. The nearest Jain temple of Subai is the oldest one from Bastar. This Bastar is a silent witness to Jainism practiced in the Koraput region for centuries.
