Bata Heritage is proud to relaunch with Wilson the John Wooden sneaker, one of the most iconic products that the brand has carried in its 124-year history. Wilson and Bata partnered in the early 1970s to develop sports shoes, including the John Wooden sneaker. It was a tribute to one of America’s greatest basketball coaches and the only person to be inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame both as a player (1960) and a coach (1973). Nicknamed the ‘Wizard of Westwood’ , John Wooden won 10 NCAA national championships between 1964 and 1975 as head coach at UCLA— including a record seven in a row. Wooden retired at the age of 64 after a 27-year UCLA coaching career, and in 2009 was voted the "Greatest Coach of All Time” by The Sporting News magazine.
Launched in 1977, the Bata x Wilson John Wooden sneaker featured a revolutionary polyurethane sole that was exceptionally lightweight. It was famously worn by Magic Johnson on and off the court. Despite the sneaker’s design excellence, the line only lasted one year but its influence lived on—as it is one of the most sought-after sneakers among collectors. This relaunch includes a limited-edition hi-top and lo-top John Wooden sneaker crafted from the orange grained leather used to make the official Wilson NCAA basketball. White rubber sole and eyelets contrast the black laces, side logo and detailing at the back. On the left heel, 1977—year the shoe was created—is embossed in gold, while the serial number is featured on the right heel. To commemorate John Wooden’s 620 wins during his coaching at UCLA, only 620 pairs of lo-tops and 620 pairs of hi-tops in this limited-edition series will be produced. The Bata x Wilson John Wooden limited-edition sneakers are available at Dover Street Market New York, The Webster New York and Miami Beach, Beams International Gallery Tokyo, De Bijenkorf Amsterdam, Baskets Amsterdam, as well as www.bataheritage.com and www.wilson.com. The Bata x Wilson collection will be released in Dover Street Market in the14th July and then will progress to be released in other stores. There will be a exclusive launch event on the 26th July. This Spring/Summer season, two iconic brands are coming together to give sneaker fans a heavy dose of retro cool. Bata Heritage will feature iconic Star Wars characters on the Bata Bullets and Bata Tennis capsule collection.
Here’s a bit of trivia for you. The Bata brand is as Malaysian to us as Milo, nasi lemak and roti canai. Only Bata isn’t Malaysian. On that note, neither is Milo. Bata was founded by Tomas Bata in 1894 in the village of Zlin, now fondly known as the Czech Republic. So, now you know.
I know some of you have donned Bata school shoes in your younger years, and even celebrities like the late Kurt Cobain have been seen wearing Bata sneakers.
When Bata meets Star Wars
The Star Wars x Bata Heritage SS18 capsule collection echoes the legacy of Bata and also captures the retro feel of the original Star Wars by George Lucas.
Originally created in 1964 for the Baltimore Bullets basketball team, the Bata Bullets line was discontinued in the mid-70s. It was then re-launched in 2016 as a testament to the brand’s value of endurance.
The Star Wars edition Bata Bullets come in high-top versions in black or white canvas, with red or blue Star Wars rubber patches on the side. On the back there’s an iconic light saber, while there’s matching piping around the shoe and top eyelet.
The first Bata Tennis shoe was made in India back in 1936. The original catered primarily to school children for their Physical Education classes and it continues to be one of Bata’s best-selling shoes today.
For the SS18 collection, the low-top versions is emblazoned with tri-coloured graphics of Darth Vader, R2D2 and Storm Trooper. Both Vader and Storm Trooper drawings come in white, black and grey, while R2D2 comes in fresh white, blue and grey combination.
