Short version: a friend posted about it on Lex and I went “oh hey, people keep physically threatening me and talking about lynching me, I should learn how to defend myself better as a disabled Black transfemme who uses a cane full time” then started classes. The faction is Strange Fox Fighting Arts, which is (inhales) an anticolonial/antiimperial/antizionist/antifascist/antiracist, covid conscious, transmisogyny-informed, disability-informed, trans-run martial arts faction. (I want to actually say all that because a lot of fash and white supremacists REALLY like other Bataireacht factions bc Irish fetishism)

Cú teaches masked in person classes once or twice a month in DC at Highstyle Jiujitsu (a leftist jiujitsu gym), weekly at SFFA’s gym, and online weekly with options for multiple timezones! You can read more at www.strangefoxfightingarts.com or see more at @bmorebata on ig!

I have *some* martial arts background (taekwondo and informal wrestling) and had wanted to start capoeira pre-disability bc I used to be a professional dancer, and had been interested in ways to defend myself beyond firearms even with my disabilities for ages.

So being able to learn a distinct style for fighting with a cane, from a trans teacher? I was interested instantly.

From there it became one of the most important parts of my life, honestly.

Not only was it taught by another trans person (Coach Cú, our faction leader, is a trans man), but it was covid-conscious and serious about it, not just “masks ✨suggested✨”. Over time, I got to go to even more stuff like our factionfest and the Big Bata Weekend a year ago in Chicago to meet Foxes from everywhere! :3

I also passed my level 1 test and am now a Hare, the first level/animal mentor of our faction’s system (Doyle style, a two-handed Bata style) and I really wanna get a tattoo to connemmerate it.

Bata

Bata from Saka is an Egyptian bull-god of the New Kingdom, who represents together with his brother Anubis the 17th Upper Egyptian Nome. Until the middle of the Eighteenth Dynasty Bata was represented as a ram and later as a bull. Bata is probably identical with the death god Bt of the Egyptian Old Kingdom, known from the Saqqara necropolis, for instance from the Mastaba of Ti. Bata is not mentioned in the Pyramid Texts and Coffin Texts. Bata is the name of the protagonist in the Tale of Two Brothers, a copy of which survives on the New Kingdom Papyrus D’Orbiney, where he is the brother of Anubis. He is also mentioned in the Ptolemaic Papyrus Jumilhac.

Khnum, creator of humanity, makes a wife for Bata. Because of her divine creation, Bata's wife is sought after by the pharaoh. When the pharaoh succeeds in bringing her to live with him, she tells him to cut down the tree in which Bata has put his heart. They do so, and Bata dies. Anubis resurrects Bata, who takes the form of a bull and goes to see his wife and the pharaoh. His wife, aware of his presence as a bull, asks the pharaoh if she may eat it. The bull is then sacrificed, and two drops of Bata's blood fall, from which grow two Persea trees. Bata, now in the form of a tree, again addresses his wife, and she appeals to the pharaoh to cut down the Persea trees and use them to make furniture. As this is happening, a splinter ends up in the wife's mouth, impregnating her. She eventually gives birth to a son, whom the pharaoh ultimately makes crown prince. It is later revealed that the crown prince is another form of Bata, who ultimately becomes king after the pharaoh's death.
