BATMAN IN BURBANK

Finally dragged myself to downtown Burbank at dawn this morning to see the new Batman statue that was installed last week.

The statue is 7 1/2 feet tall and is based on Jim Lee’s depiction of Batman from the Hush storyline.

DC Comics moved to Burbank from New York a few years ago, now nestled in an office building about midway between the Warner Bros. Studios and Walt Disney Studios.

The statue is situated on Burbank’s City Walk, right in front of the (currently closed) AMC Burbank 16 Theatre.

It’s pretty impressive, but I bet it would be mores at night, as it is underlit by two bright lamps on the base. Currently there’s a 10pm to 6am curfew in California to try to curb the COVID-19 surge we’re experiencing, so it may be awhile before I venture out to get some night shots.

Just after dawn (I took these shots at about 6:45 am) was great time to visit the statue because there was no one around.  City Walk gets very crowded later in the day, especially at night, and there are still too many people running around without masks.

I hope the Visit Burbank organization sponsors more DC-themed statues.  Batman definitely needs to be joined by Superman and Wonder Woman, especially as the latter’s new film is due to be released next month.

We only get allusions to Batman’s past battles in the DC Extended Universe movies, but from the way Alfred tells it, it sounds like things were comparatively low-key with exploding mechanical penguins and the like. Now that Batman has to face “the Devil himself” in alien general Steppenwolf and his legion of Parademons, it’s time to step up the armor game (and get a little help from some friends, of course).
