30 years later...this mini (old lead) sat in my kit primed black since 1995. I found it last week doing some cleanup and reorganization of my painting area and decided to finally finish my Battle Cow. :)

100th blog post: A special with King Kenny

Well we celebrate a milestone in therealscottishmike blog - we reach my 100th post (well, the personal possessive is used rather incorrectly as this includes re-blogs of other people's works but according to Tumblr, this ain't an issue). And who better than to make the subject of this than none other than everybody's other favourite Scot - so we give King Kenny his first interview on social media, where he talks about Battle Cattle, his total disregard of Coldplay and what gigs he considers truly to be 'top darts':

What do you have against Coldplay exactly?

For me, they are totally meaningless. The Clash, Joy Division and the Buzzcocks all influenced the music scene we enjoy today. Coldplay offer nothing original and in my opinion, are middle class English wankers. (Note: nothing against the English; if I had a vote in the referendum, I would vote 'no'). Even here in Shanghai we have acts who are attempting to make a difference, e.g. Pairs and Death to Giants, doing something original, if not always to my taste.

·  Describe this special relationship with Battle Cattle and why you consented to the cover of "Kennedy's Not Dead"?

Alex is simply one of my best mates. The story of the cover starts in Ho Chi Minh City where I received a bottle of Jaegermeister for my birthday from my mate Aldo. This remained unopened until a few days after Spring Festival, 2011. I thought it a good idea to take it to Alex's and to share，however, the Jaeger wasn't to Alex's taste. Suffice to say that the whole bottle got tanned(*), before we hit some club. Is it fair to say that I cannot recall the trip from Alex's place to club and back, including pavement rest? Sorry, I couldn't comment. As for the cover, well, it is a compliment that the band asked, isn't it?

·  Who have you done the most damage to in the mosh pit?

Probably BO, but I'll also answer the opposite as it was Kai who did the most damage to me. He came to see Battle Cattle at Lune one night, as always, late. This time he'd been enjoying the Triple IPA at Boxing Cat (~8% ABV) and was steaming(*). Nutted(*) me big style, but in a friendly way. A few months later we were in Boxing Cat when one of the guest ales happened to be Glasgow Kiss Scotch Ale, again around 8%. Let's say this is just one of the weird coincidences that happen in Shanghai/China/Asia; I am sure all your readers have similar experiences.....

·  You've joined XXYY and Battle Cattle on stage - any other bands to throw into the mix?

I recall some dancing a la Ian Curtis on stage to French band Les Terribles in July 2011, otherwise nothing.

·  ·  What is your favourite Clash song?

This is unanswerable, matey. Complete Control and (White Man) In Hammersmith Palais have to be joint first as the world's best singles, ever. Then you have the best opening track of any album, anywhere, in Safe European Home, from Give 'Em Enough Rope, my favourite Clash album, though not one the critics enjoyed. (Hey, the critics didn't enjoy Ash's Nuclear Sounds, either.....) Also, some great b-sides, as well. Every time I used to land at Hefei Luogang airport, I'd be whistling City of the Dead to myself. 1-2 Crush on You is also superb, a very old song which Joe originally sang. Oh, and if there are any Coldplay fans reading, well, my favourite track off London Calling would be Wrong ‘Em Boyo. But, I wouldn't put any from London Calling in my top ten. If anybody wants a copy of the Clash's fifth ever gig, and the last with Keith Leveine, just bring an Android USB cable the next time you meet me; this show is perpetually on my 'phone.

·  And your favourite beer?

Orval, but unavailable in China. (Used to be available in Ole, but rumour is that it is banned as Orval means something rude in Chinese…..) Of that readily available here- Aecht Shernkerla Rachbier. Honourable mentions: Scottish- Caledonian 80/, if it is still around. Bitter- Timothy Taylor's Landlord. Pilsner- Pilsner Urquell and Jever. Wheat Beer- Schneider Weiss. Bock Beer- Aventinus. Trappist- almost them all, White is the best of the Chimays; Rochefort 10 is special. If you want to drink 9% beer that tastes like water, then, Delerium Tremors is your boy. I could be a jake in stating that Duvel is my favourite ‘everyday’ beer….it’s 8.5%..... Beer Lao, Chang, Singha and Angkor are all decent, but be wary of export Singha which is watered down to 5% from 6.4%. Question- why do we have dozens of wheat beers in China, but no Alt or Kolsch? Do I know something others don’t? Chinese beer in clear glass bottle- none, don't waste your money. (If you get offered clear glass bottled beer at a banquet, insist on yellow wine, or even, baijiu.....)

·  Now no longer KK of K - how does it feel to be away from Kunshan?

For me, it is time to move on. Kunshan's an improving city, and I leave many friends behind. If there's a 'Ten things to do in China before you leave', then check Whales Bar out, when there is a visiting band playing. I wish PIMMS Live Bar success, even though I may be unconvinced as to the business model. Where I am now, Juegang town, Rudong county, is like Larkhall without the Orangemen; a crossroads where the locals are all indoors at 22:30, inbreeding. But, I think I will grow to like the place…..

·  Most memorable gigs in Shanghai in your view?

Beijing band IDH, with support from Boys Climbing Ropes, October 2010. BCR opened with their as-yet unreleased track sung in Chinese, with just Xiao and Devlin. Simply stunning. IDH were, for me, watching Kraftwerk in 1975; just the most empty and vacant electronica. The girl on keyboards was like a Madame Tussauds wax model, completely motionless.

BCR farewell show was special; just a pity about the reunion. Battle Cattle at 696; second time, full set, was rocking, the best of the Frankie gigs and was preceded by Xiao and Jordan doing an acoustic set, some of which is on Douban & Youku and worth checking out, especially Socially Awkward.

Battle Cattle’s last show at Harleys was the dogs’(*), and a message to other bands: These guys debuted four new songs at their last show; you guys hardly debut four new songs in a year…..

Cert III in Music Industry Skills

After a lot of in depth research and surveying, Nathan and I are in agreement that the Battle Cattle song we call ‘the first song’ because they opened with it  at the Sweet Summer Sweat Fest is one of the best songs ever. it’s the one that goes ‘dah, dah dah dhahdah dah dah’ and Alex has that awesome sound just by turning on his delay pedal. He is, what we in the industry call, ‘a smart arse’. But enough industry talk, Battle Cattle have thrown a pre-mastered version of Factory on their Douban. One can assume this will be on their new record. When does the record come out? Fucked if I know. Shoot them an email and hassle them. Or ask Kenny.
