The Battle of Grunwald: Poland and Lithuania Break the Power of the Teutonic Order
On July 15, 1410, one of the greatest battles of medieval Europe was fought at Grunwald (also known as Tannenberg), during the Polish–Lithuanian–Teutonic War. The allied forces of the Kingdom of Poland and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania faced the powerful army of the Teutonic Order, a military-religious state that had dominated much of the Baltic region for generations.
Led by King Władysław II Jagiełło of Poland and Grand Duke Vytautas of Lithuania, the allied army achieved a decisive victory over the Teutonic Knights under Grand Master Ulrich von Jungingen. The battle was a turning point in Eastern European history, with the Teutonic Order suffering a devastating defeat and losing much of its political and military influence.
The victory at Grunwald strengthened the union between Poland and Lithuania and established them as major powers in Europe. Although the Teutonic Order survived for more than a century, its defeat at Grunwald marked the beginning of its decline and remains celebrated as one of the most important military triumphs in Polish and Lithuanian history.
