✨️Batuk, batok, tatak, fatek, batek, tadtad, patik. All various terms throughout the Philippine archipelago that mean tattoo.

One of the original names the Spaniards gave to the islands of what is now known as the Philippines was "Islas de los Pintados" or the Islands of the Painted Ones. This was because the people they met were heavily tattooed. The batuk were given as marks of valor, womanhood, and also had spiritual aspects as one could not safely pass on to the afterlife without getting their marks. Each motif represented different meanings, drawing from nature, cultural practices, and the ancestors.

For those interested in learning about our precolonial culture and beliefs, I always recommend reading Barangay: 16th Century Philippine Culture & Society by William H. Scott. This is a helpful book that discusses many topics and should be a starting point when doing your research.

This is just a brief overview of the traditional Filipino tattooing culture. To get a traditional handtapped tattoo, it's not just for the sake of "pinoy pride". It's a spiritual process and a ritual in itself. Before getting one, you must give your offerings to the anito, the spirits and ancestors, and the diwata. This is to ask for their blessings and for them to watch over you as you receive your batok.

Hi, I just wanted to say that I love your blog! I'm a pinay woman who moved to Australia when I was young and have since been trying to reconnect with our pre-colonial culture. I've become interested in the the traditional tattooing culture, and just had some questions to ask. Did the Tagalog people ever tattoo or has the knowledge been lost? Also, did the women tattoo their faces? I've seen some pinay women with lines on their chin and think it looks beautiful on them. Salamat!

While at the time when the Spaniards first arrived, the Tagalog did not tattoo, it is believed they once did based on terms they had for tattooing. It's believed they may have prior to Islam arriving among the Tagalog via influences from Borneo and the royal family of Brunei marrying and having ties with the local Datu's and nobility in the Tagalog region during the time.

While tattooing on the face for women was more rare and often were done on men based on their ability to fight and any accomplishments they did during wars and raids, some groups did tattoo on the face for women, particularly the groups in the Cordillera.
