“This classic Engadine farmhouse in the Swiss hamlet of Florins was renovated and converted by Philipp Baumhauer Architekten with respect for the present. It consisted of a residential area facing the village center and an agricultural section away from the street.
The building was totally refurbished and additional living area was additional. By first removing the floor of the back barn section of the property, a 3-level, structurally independent wood framework, was then inserted inside the current stone frame, distinguishing itself on the exterior facade as a big wooden volume. The design enables the historical big volume of the barn to stay legible in spite of the modifications. The 2-story residing room extends up to the roof of the inserted construction, whose inner surfaces are clad with larch wood. 4 added rooms that have been also developed inside of the previous barn constitute a 2-degree sculptural transition to the former living quarters.
Views are open by means of the entire home along its longitudinal axis, and a huge sliding glass door to the balcony extends the see to the mountains of the Engadine. The common nearby motif of deep window reveals in thick exterior walls has been adopted and exaggerated, signifying the alterations inside. With their sharp-edged detailing, these handful of massive window openings stand out in contrast to the existing architecture.
Referencing historical barns in the vicinity, rough-sawn, untreated larch boards had been picked for the facade. The ongoing aging procedure of the wood helps the project to match within the built fabric of its surroundings.”
