Oban, Scotland was at the end of the train line coming in from Edinburgh. My next step was to hop abroad 2 ferries in order to reach the island of Iona, the birth place of Christianity for Scotland thanks for St. Columba from Ireland (see post below). I stayed in a wonderful hostel, Youth Hostel in Oban and another exceptional cozy home like hostel in Iona, both overlooking the ocean. (photos above at bottom)
History: Oban is a town and port in western Scotland that has provided food and shelter to mankind since Mesolithic times., and a gateway to the hebridean islands of Mull and Iona. Evidence of early cave dwellers has been found in several locations in the center of Oban, founded in 1794 with shipping the alcohol, wool, slate and kelp, to larger ports such as Liverpool and Glasgow in which this town began its rapid expansion. There is a Colosseum-like McCaig’s Tower which overlooks Oban Bay and outside the town is the ruined Dunollie Castle.
The views are breathtaking off the bay of Oban and Iona for that matter.
