omg do you play bass clarinet??
I do! Not great, since it's been a few months and I've mainly been on Bb clarinet, but I do know how. After all, the fingerings for the two different clarinet are exactly the same.
I also play tenor saxophone, which is similar but is 10x more temperamental than the bass clarinet.

Oh my GOOOODDD ANON DONT GET ME STARTED ON MOANIN, I love Moanin sooooo much, but you know what???? You know freaking what??? I PLAYED CLARINET ON MOANIN, THATS RIGHT Bb ClarIENET. Story time: its my senior year of high school, I have only ever held a bari sax for a total of 5 minutes during all of high school. Clarinet is my baaabbyyyy. I had been in jazz band before, on alto sax and on tenor sax as well. But not oh boy. I had never touched a lucious bari at this point. So when we first got the piece, I listened to a recording and was just fcking J A M M I N G, I mean, a real HEADBANGING time, so I’m like “oh wow! This is so cool! Good thing I get to play clarinet for the harder soli parts :))))” yet little do I know, our bari player at the time had been having trouble with the you know, buuuuuhhh yup-buh, the bari part in the beginning?? And I’m like, “come ooonn dude, *I* could do it and I don’t even PLAY bari!” And everyone is like lol Mikaela on Bari?? So as soon as I got into college, I found the professor in charge of the jazz band and I played it off all cool right?? Like I didn’t ‘need’ to play Bari sax in jazz band, but I RREEEAAALLLYY needed to play Bari sax in jazz band. You feel? So i rent it out, and literally I’m thrown into the deep end on music. In talking 5 sharps, fast tempos, double sharps, and all that jazz (pun intended). So I’m barely sight reading in the first week of rehearsals. Luckily I had a lit friend who taught me a lot about sax (god bless em’) and I fucking. Rock. On. Bari. Sax. I mean I only have 1 year on it now, and I want a new mouthpiece and ligature (oh god my friend steven has a “star mouthpiece” or whatever and he let me play on it one time, and I almost started crying after playing one note its so good.) But I’m preeettyyyy good. Ngl.
But yeah, long story short, I didn’t play Bari on Moanin in high school, so now I have a lot of repressed salt about it :)
okay update again! still day three
so im actually cooking, i can play the c major scale from the lowest e up to the g that’s right above the staff!! (not like. on time or without pauses, but i can play all those notes)
i can play the basic short versions of: hot cross buns, we will rock you, another one bites the dust, and happy birthday! (the last 2 are the hardest for me. aobtd has some fast bits and hb has some high bits)
im actually so proud of myself like this is my 3rd day ever owning or playing a clarinet like fuck yeah
okay so im getting some sound out of my clarinet but for some reason it’s an octave higher than it shoukd be??? also my cheeks keep puffing
anyways something about my embouchure is wrong if anyone knows what it is please tell me 😭
okay clarinet update!
first of all, why do reeds literally just taste like almonds. maybe this is just the vandoren reeds. idk (the clarinet came with one packaged 2.5 vandoren reed, i also have a box of 10 2.0 rico reeds which i’m going to switch to next time i play)
so i managed tp get a consistent sound on just the barrel and mouthpiece, and i checked with a tuner and it was the right note! (concert f#, bb clari g#)
however once i fully assembled the clarinet i could barely get any sound out, every once and a while i would get some sound
i just figured i’d try again tomorrow since it’s a fresh reed anyway so it shouldn’t even be playing this long yet lmao
