I was so interested in this and was going to buy it when it came out in trades! What do people hate about the last issue? Just the total absence of Buckynat? Or was there worse? I don't mind spoilers, I can't stand suspense.
well to be fair i haven’t actually seen anyone specifically complaining about the final issue. tbh not much happened in it. the criticism that i’ve seen has been piling up since about the series half-way point. but i’ll try to sum it up to the best of my abilities.
tbh a lot of what i’m aware of is from frustrated buckynat shippers. a lot of people didn’t find it believable that bucky would rush into a relationship so quickly and/or were turned off by the psychic blue alien romance. it’s a little strange but didn’t bug me that much and i even grew a bit fond of ventolin, but then again i ship lots of different things regardless of canon. like, for me it’s a bonus if my ship is acknowledged in canon so w/e.
other complaints i’ve seen: the plot being convoluted and confusing. i’ll admit it can be hard to follow but i had fun trying to figure everything out. also (mild spoiler) bucky voluntarily takes hallucinogens, which a some people thought was out of character. i think there’s a distinction between using substances voluntarily as opposed to being forced to take them (as it’s implied the soviets did as part of the winter soldier project) so i could see bucky choosing to take hallucinogens as long as it was on his own terms.
the series also had a definite pacifism theme which sat wrong with some people given bucky’s history as a soldier. i interpreted it more as bucky starting to explore other options. realizing he could do things other than act as a force of violence. i didn’t read the story as condemning all violence, just questioning the use of violence as a first resort.
ANYWAY that went super long, sorry. i tried to be fair to both sides but i’m definitely biased as someone who enjoyed the series. YMMV i guess. on a final note, i think part of the core issue is that a lot of us (myself included) expected great things from ales kot on a winter soldier book. i think it’s a fun book but it seems like kot was burned out and done with marvel probably from the very beginning, and i think the writing reflects that. I hope i haven’t done too good a job laying out the issues with this series because i thought it was really fun! if none of that turned you off i recommend reading it! i think the first trade is already out!
