If you have access, this collection of eye witness interviews about World War One is well worth watching, and incredibly moving. In particular, John Willis-Palmer taking about the physical and emotional point where he started to think about self inflicted injuries, (about 12 minutes in to his extended interview.) and how he "didn't have the guts" to do it. Very difficult to watch, but I learned a lot.
