From 'Why should we engage' in 2009 to 'How do we engage' in 2011, the journalists community seems to be positively evolving.
One of the major point of debate at this conference was the issue of verification. Of the many ways stated in this article, I believe that one of the best verification method is following up a source (found on the different social networking sites) by conventional methods of email, phone or even face-to-face meetings.
Also, it is easy to understand why many of the old-school journalists are uncomfortable with social collaborative journalism. To them, I would like to say that if you want to maintain your professional influence, you HAVE TO understand and adopt the social media tools.
I liked the equation set by Esra Dogramaci, Al Jazeera Turkish social media coordinator:
(Information - noise) + context = responsible reporting
Context being the most important but also easily misplaced element.
