GUILT coursing through Peter’s veins, he can feel the weight sitting against his chest, his own failure practically SUFFOCATING him. He’s supposed to be a superhero. He’s supposed to save people, he’s supposed to save his friends. Instead, he just ends up putting everybody in DANGER. Deep down, he knew the day would arrive when he WOULDN’T be able to to save one of his friends. The day he’d fail so spectacularly that it results in something he can’t fix, because of course that’s his luck. Peter Parker loses everyone-- it’s a constant in his life that he can’t seem to get rid of. And it always seems to be his fault. This time...it’s Betty. Caught up in the fight, in the middle of danger, Peter hadn’t been QUICK ENOUGH. If he’d just been stronger, quicker, better...she wouldn’t be gone.
Head hangs long as teary eyes gaze at the ground, shoulders shaking as water droplets spill over his cheeks. Heart pounds with grief as he lifts the back of his hands to wipe his eyes-- ALONE, he’s allowing himself to break. He can’t believe he let this happen... “I’m sorry, Betty-” He chokes out-- she can’t HEAR him, he’s talking to himself, but he can’t stop himself. “I’m sorry, it’s-- it’s my fault, I should’ve saved you, I’m so-” Breath hitches in his throat as another sob squeezes it’s way out his throat. “-Sorry.”

“Who? Rachel?“ And Jason can almost laugh at the thought alone. But it’s adorable, and he holds back the laugh because he doesn’t want Betty to think he is making fun of her, far from the truth. “She’s just a friend. My. . .well, Bruce’s old ward is taking care of her and we hang out.“ And he makes sure to emphasize the just friend part. “I might live with Bruce Wayne but I’m not like him, you know. I’m a one gal kind of guy.” And he offers a wide smile, honest, genuine, hiding his own embarrassment well.

Sure, he was in the city for only a couple of days, but at the moment, Peter was busy and Bruce was elsewhere dealing with business (something about Stark Industries but he hardly listens anymore). It is lucky that he had Betty Brant’s number after a small research because it seem she got more free time than Peter at the time to show him around. It doesn’t bother him that she is, well, cute. You can’t blame him, considering he was, a teenager. He arrives at the school with Alfred driving him around, and he can see the young blonde at the entrance. He wants to dismiss the butler (he still can’t believe they exist) but Alfred was doing what the butler did best, taking care of everyone. “I’ll be fine, Alfie. Thanks for driving me.” And he makes sure to get his bag pack with his suit inside just in case. “I’ll call as soon as I’m heading home.” And it seems to make the butler at ease before he finally leaves and he approaches Betty, a little smile on his lips, perhaps a little too smug. “Can you believe butlers are still a thing? Wild.” And Jason gives a little skip on the next step before looking around, grey-green eyes glancing back at Betty. “You said you knew cool places. Let’s see if you can surprise me.”

Everything has been...rough ever since their return. Peter doesn’t know about everybody else, but he knows he came back DIFFERENT from the Blip. His experience wasn’t exactly...universal, after all. He wakes up in a cold sweat from nightmares of his body breaking apart-- he can feel every second of it-- and watching the light fade from his mentor’s eyes, but it isn’t just all in his head-- they’re MEMORIES. And that just makes it worse. He knows everyone else has gone through a lot of shit, too, and although he can’t fully be...truthful about everything that happened to him, it’s still nice to have some support.
Hands clasped together, Peter’s gaze flickers towards Betty, burning tears stinging his eyes as if they’re THREATENING to fall at any moment-- he doesn’t want them to. He doesn’t want to cry in front of her. There’s a PAINFUL DRUM in his chest as it tightens further, and he tries to force his lips to stretch into a smile, but they barely do.
“I mean-- everyone-- everyone’s experienced this, right? And we’re back now, so it should....should be okay...” He doesn’t feel okay. But maybe she will. “We’ll be alright...”

After everything that had happened Gwen was surprised that her father had let her go on the Europe trip. She had certainly suspected he would have asked her to stay home after things had finally returned to normal. She figured it was just for his own sanity and not having to worry about her because he knew she’d be at home. Thankfully he had let her go, though she’s pretty sure the fact that May let Peter go was part of his decision. Her father liked to call it the buddy system. It always brought a smile to her lips when he did.
“ I finally saw the rooming assignment looks like it’s you and me as bunkmates,” Gwen said as she occupied the seat next to the other blond. “I mean as long as the building doesn’t sink into one of the canals,” she said with a soft chuckle. If Steve asked she wasn’t going to tell him about nearly stepping through a floorboard in the lobby. “ I was told we have an hour to get settled and just hang out before we all head out as a group.”

Stomach twisted in knots as Peter pulls the cellphone out, just barely able to hold it up without the tiny object slipping from his fingertips. Hands are shaking, clammy to the touch as he struggles to unlock the screen, opening his contacts. MAYBE he should be calling MJ about this-- but Betty is higher up on the list, and with black spots dancing in front of him and his sluggish pace, he feels as if he’s about to pass out any minute. Putting the ringing phone up to his ear, he tries not to focus on the blood that stains his suit, or his face, or the way he’s slumped against a wall in an alleyway, pain coursing through his body.
“Hey, Betty-” He croaks out the moment he gets an answer. “Can you-- uh-- can you tell MJ I’m not g’nna make it to Decathlon practice today?” FINGERS CROSSED she doesn’t ask for an explanation-- maybe he can say he’s sick or something. “Don’ wan’ her to get mad I sk’pped again-”
