So, on my last fic I added somethings from my personal experience, as both disabled (though I don't use a wheelchair) and past youth at risk. And just, it got important to me, and I wanted to share it.
An Archive of Our Own, a project of the Organization for Transformative Works
It's Barbara Gordon focused, and even though it's not JUST about her recovery, it's still part of it.
And it's just - it's really important to me. You CAN grieve what you'll never be, and what might have been taken from you. And you CAN be happy and proud as a disabled person. And both CAN co-exist at the same time.
I'm proud to be who I am (mostly). I think I'm going to a good place in life. But it doesn't change the fact that sometimes I hate the fact I need help in things, or the way my brain works, or how people don't seem to understand when I say-this is HARD for me.
And it's something that we can't usually show out. Bc when the world keep pushing you down, telling you you're wrong, unworthy, unable - you can only FIGHT or surrender. So we go out there, saying "no, I'm strong! No, I can do this! I'm great! I wouldn't change a thing!" And sometimes it's true. And sometimes it's less true, but we can't tell this to "outsiders" bc THEY DON'T GET IT.
Anyway, this is my take on Barbara Gordon. I hope you like this.
There are things (walking, running, grappling through the city at night, wind in her hair- ) she'll never do again. Other skills (dressing, washing, moving from one place to another-) she had to re-learn, finding new ways to do what was so easy before. It's been years, and she graduated college, even with the injury. (Study on painkillers, reading while doing the PT exercise). She got a job as a librarian. She learned new skills (rolling, coding, how to be the eye-in-the-sky, and coordinating big and small teams-). She's not the same person as she was. ("You evolved", grins the fifteen years old little shit who still lives, rent-free, in her head. "You're like a fucking Pokemon!")
I'm not a wheelchair user, but I had to use one for a few days last month. I use forearm crutches sometimes, for injuries or chronic pain. And I just thought it would be nice to add how much accessibility aids are AMAZING. Like, being disabled is hard - but it's not bc of the aids we need. On the contrary. Mobility (and other) aids HELP US. I love using crutches, bc it means less pain on bad days. It means I CAN leave my house, even during bad days. noise-blocking Headphones mean I can be around people even when things are harder.
I also tried to respect the grief and sadness about things that she can't do, or had to relearn how to do (differently) while showing it's not the end. It's hard, but things are possible.
[I hope it makes sense. Thinking is a little hard now]

The Back Room and Shelter are inspired by places I used to go as a teen. The BR, especially, is based on a specific YaR center that was my safe place, my shelter, during difficult times as a teen. When I didn't, couldn't trust anyone they were there. When I ran away, when I was homeless, they helped with food and getting housing.
They'll never read it, but thank you for being there.
io's hard (to say the least) to romantically ship with so I thought I'd make a post talking about it. io has a very specific type. innocence, pacifism, and positivity will never attract them (in fact, it's very likely to do the opposite). io desires confidence and deadliness above all else. someone who can kill, who can hurt, and despite their feelings on the matter, can, would, and most likely will do it again. people who have trauma tend to appeal to them more, too - as often those people understand why io might act the way they do. to sum it up, io is attracted to people who have gray morals. skewed morals. people who can embrace violence, whether they like it or not. although... io does tend to favor those who like it. [don't be terribly discouraged though, as lucius did not like embracing violence but io loved him beyond words.] I would also like to mention really quickly here that io is also attracted to banter/snark/sass, fiery personalities, and powerful (physically/magically) people. strength of character is something that is fantastic at catching their eye.
speaking of trauma - io carries a shitton of it. they were abused mentally, emotionally, and physically by their parents for 23 years. eighteen centuries has done a whole lot in terms of trying to recover, but io still deals with fits of anger, dissociation, and flashbacks. they're also extremely dependent on alcohol (high functioning alcoholic) and despite their desire to quit, will not seek the help needed for it. love and trust do not go hand in hand with io. like I've said I hate to say it but I genuinely think io is incapable of 100% trust. I trust you... is always followed by the ultimatum, as much as I can. io's concept of trust has been irreparably shattered. there is no fitting the pieces back together no matter how badly either party want it. asking io do you trust me? is perhaps the worst question you could ask. you don't want to hear the answer, unless you're willing to accept io's reasoning. io also does not experience romantic attraction immediately, and when they do finally experience it, it's very rare and only in an already established relationship - they're demiromantic. now you might be going, hey adair where's the good stuff? love and trust do not go hand in hand, yes. but io loves hard. they can easily fall into devotion to an unhealthy degree. they want to help their partner, they want to comfort, they want to cook meals and share kisses and embrace every bit of physical affection they can. inter mundos becomes something that io can use to show their partner the world. week-long vacations wherever they want to go. dinner in another country. io embraces violence. io likes it. they'll fight tooth and nail for their partner. io lets their softer, more playful side show around partners. their humor may be deadpan, but there'll certainly be more of it. they embrace their childish side and let it show around loved ones because they know they can expect acceptance. joining them in childish pursuits only makes their love grow. io's own trauma lends them experience and intimate understanding for those who do have it. this doesn't take away the fact that sometimes things hurt and lashing out at them upsets and hurts them but... they get it? they will, most likely, end up doing the same thing at some point or another (when they don't immediately leap to self isolation). io will always come back and apologize, though. in short, io is complicated and hard to be with. they have enough baggage to fill an entire plane's luggage compartment and then some. but god, they love with every ounce of their being.
Attention, celebrities! This is Big Brother speaking and we have an important announcement. Due to a series of rulebreakers, including though not limited to Zayn Malik, Darren Criss, Bradley Cooper, Danny Miller, Imogen Poots and more, we’ve decided it’s time to pack up and leave. No, this doesn’t mean the show is over. As if we’d let you escape your contracts that easily. It means we’re moving again. The moment for open beaches and waiting staff has passed. We’re going back to our roots. All contestants will be leaving the resort, replacing it with a new and improved Big Brother house. Though some facilities will be kept, there will be many changes from stricter rules to brand-new isolation cells. There will also no longer be no poor waitress’ for Orlando Bloom to seduce. That’s right, the self-serving kitchens and bar are comin’ back. Have fun putting out those house fires. Remember, this is what happens when people don’t follow the rules.
ADMIN NOTE: Our move will be made some time on Mon. Mod Marit & I will share a link to our brand, new spanking main for everyone to take a look around on. We’re very, very excited to share what we’ve been working on with you! Threads will be allowed to be continued, though you’re welcome to take this weekend to finish them off in preparation to start fresh at our new location.
My thoughts on this new drama
Lana was rudely interrupted and she dealt with that savagely and honestly it was amazing. But that's not why people are hurt. She was answering whether Regina thought hook was right for Emma and answered it very diplomatically. She said Regina doesn't like him but if Emma is happy she is happy. That's how she interprets what's written and I agree. She didn't go any further than that, and didn't comment abt whether cs is healthy or not (I don't think it is but anyways). And then she called out sq shippers who are always being nasty abt hook and such. This is where people got hurt and understandably so. People feel that Lana was calling out all swen and I felt like that at first too. It felt like she was saying we were whiny and nasty if we don't like hook. But I thought abt it and put it into perspective a little. Lana is probably one of the most loving people I can think of. I highly doubt that's what she meant. She has always supported her fans and is a strong advocate for LGBT rights. She also has been speaking out lately abt fandom drama, ship wars, and overall hare and bullshit. So with all that in mind I think we can agree that Lana was simply referring to the nastier people in the sq fandom who target cast and cs shippers with hate. I'm guilty of this sometimes, but I'm gonna try to stop that. She just wants us all to stop fighting and being negative to each other. Sure we can hate hook but let's not start fights or tag cast, cs shippers, or writers with negative stuff. Like we need to voice our displeasure with this show, but we gotta do it in a more constructive and less hateful way. CS fans and SQ fans are both guilty of this nastiness; both sides have people who are negative and nasty abt it and who are positive to each other and other ships. Lana wasn't calling out swen as a whole she was calling out the ones who constantly hate. It's there, and there's no denying it. So let's do better. The confusion over what Lana meant probably stems from the fact that she was still mad abt being interrupted like that. It's reasonable of her to be, and people come off as more bitter when they're mad so it makes sense that her meaning got kinda lost for some people. On a side note, I genuinely feel bad for the fans who booed. Bc like ik how much Lana means to us, and I know they probably didn't intend to be rude to her. They deserved the reaction they got but I do feel bad. If you're reading this I don't think Lana hates you or anything. You fucked up but that's okay. I mean if you realize what u did was rude then you're good. I don't think Lana will be holding onto any bitterness over this bc that's just not who she is. She just wants everyone to stop being so damn negative, so just try to do better and it's all good yk? In conclusion: *come to mama by Gaga starts playing* "Everybody's got to love each other Stop throwin' stones at your sisters and your brothers Man, it wasn't that long ago we were all living in the jungle So why do we gotta put each other down When there's more than enough love to g-g-go around?" Lana loves her fans and always has supported us. Remember that. Let's stop this hate and bullshit now pls 🙏
