Hello! I've been on the Pill (microgynon 30) for about 3 months now because my periods were incredibly heavy and left me anaemic and fainting. I'm a lesbian so don't need birth control. My GP never mentioned it but I have heard a lot about how imperative it is to take BC at the same time each day. Does this apply to me too, or is that just to ensure it works as a contraceptive? Thank you for your help!
Honestly, if you take a combined estrogen and progesterone birth control pill, you don’t really need to take it at the same time every day. Even within the same 6 hours is really pretty ok. And you don’t even need to start using back-up birth control until you miss 2 days of pills.
But yes, the more specific answer to your question is this: taking the pill at the same time every day is protective against pregnancy. So if you’re not at risk for pregnancy, you don’t really have to worry about it. However, you are much more likely to have spotting and bleeding in between periods if you don’t take the pill regularly. That could be something that does affect you.
Let me say this: the birth control pill fails the people who take it. It’s hard to take at the same time every day, it’s hard to remember. It’s not a perfect method by any definition. Don’t hesitate to look for other methods that are designed to suite your life style, such as the ring, the Mirena, the Nexplanon.
