hi BBC lord of the flies review
I got out of my lotf hyperfixation a few months ago and lowk forgot a lot so i could be wrong on what happens in the books
Episode 1: Piggy 3/5 I thought that the way Ralph acted towards Piggy was a little mischaracterized, I remember him being a lot meaner in the books. I also was a little annoyed at Piggy revealing his real name, I felt like his name not being known in the books mattered to his character of being the social outcast.
Episode 2: Jack 4/5 I feel like Jack was portrayed really well. I liked the extra (??) scene of him getting scared about climbing, then wanting to keep it a secret. Idk it made me understand Jack a little bit more, how he wants to be all tough and everything. The conversation with him and Simon was nice, again, it deepened Jacks character. I was a little mad at first cause I thought it was an adaptation of Simon and Ralph’s convo from chapter seven.
Episode 3: Simon 5/5 Ommgggg the religious imageryyyyy at the beginningggg. My class didn’t talk about it, but a lot of people said that Simon was meant to represent Jesus in a way? Or just pure goodness. okay also, it’s a fact that simon was implied gay in the books, but now it’s even MORE implied and i am so here for it. adding simon’s diary was a nice touch, and i liked the relationship simon and jack had that wasn’t in the books. personally, ralph and simon were always my fav in the books since simon was implied to like ralph a little much. the lord of the flies scene was very annoying to me. it wasn’t done right, it was rushed and overlooked. simon’s death scene was equally horrific and beautiful. it was so like cinematic or whatever i just liked how they filmed and edited it. i realllyyyy like jack and simon’s relationship. it expanded on both of their characters. also the closet is lowk glass. simon is my fav and will always be my fav
Episode 4: Ralph 4/5 They made Ralph’s backstory a little different which i didn’t like a whole lot. more of a personal opinion tho, i liked the horses and the cottage. I don’t really like where jacks tribe is, i always imagined it like actually on the rocks. piggys death was sad and hurt a little more cause it was longer, but the book did it so much better. pushing piggy off the mountain thing with an entire boulder and hitting his head and bleeding out just shows how little they all cared for intelligence and civilization (which piggy represented) (and i guess the conch is rules and society but they got that right) and how easy it was to throw it all away. it was all in one swoop yk. i am really liking how eerie and scary this is. the pictures of the trees is so spooky (maybe bc i’m watching in a dark room alone). simon’s (and piggy’s) ghost or vision or smth that ralph saw was really great, even if it was for a moment nice touch. i loveeeee the use of color in this show. the red forest is just like omg amazing i love it. i’m kinda mad the entire island didnt burn down. the ending kinda underwhelming compared to the ending of the book. there was more suspense in the book.
other notes and commentary: roger didnt have a very significant role in this series which kinda made me sad. one of my favorite things in the book was him throwing small stones at the littuns at the beginning, then evolving to throw a boulder onto piggy. i think he’s a very overlooked character in general, and possibly even more violent than jack (mostly in the book).
one line that stuck with me in the book was “he sharpened a stick at both ends” smth along the lines of that. it implied that they were legit gonna behead Ralph. kinda sad they didn’t include that.
since they didn’t see piggys death, i felt like it took away from the evil they became in a way. in the book, they didn’t care. they saw it but they didn’t feel bad. i don’t even think they cared about simon’s death either.
the closeups are lowk rlly funny i’m sorry
overall, this is a great adaptation. ofc, it’s not gonna be word for word in the book so i’m not too mad about slight inaccuracies. i think it did a great job expanding the story and characters while staying in line with story and having creative liberties. this adaptation isnt perfect in terms of accuracy, but i still really liked it!!!! mad they aren’t as violent compared to the books but oh well
change can be good
