Today is the Sacramento region’s Big Day of Giving! From midnight until 11:59PM on May 3rd, give where your heart is. What’s Up Sac loves the nonprofits that make Sacramento a great place to live, work, and play, so we’re dedicating today’s issue to some of our friends. Sacramento Philharmonic & Opera: Cre8tive Concerts at the SP&O offices, DOCO, and the Capitol Rose Garden. 10AM, 130PM + 3PM
Sisters in Service BDOG Celebration: Support Wellspring Women’s Center, Community Against Sexual Harm, Street Soccer USA, and Harm Reduction Services with sangria, appetizers, music by Kenny Beasley and the Cats Meow and pick-up soccer games. The celebration will showcase the operations of each nonprofit, and offer the chance to train in the use of naloxone -- the widely used miracle drug that saves lives of those overdosing on opioids. At Wellspring Women’s Center from 5-7PM.
HYP Big Day of Giving House Party: Habitat for Humanity of Greater Sacramento is having a house party at Capitol Garage to celebrate the community’s generosity on Big Day of Giving! Enjoy food, music, games, raffles and construction-themed cocktails. Capitol Garage will donate 20% of sales to support Habitat when Habitat is mentioned at checkout! Donations will go towards a recycle home build project for a hardworking single mother named Anna and her two young children. Capitol Garage 1500 K Street. 5:30-7:30pm. RSVP here for free entry.
Water Education Foundation: Stop by the Water Education Foundation office in Midtown to learn how they educate and foster public understanding of one of California’s most precious natural resources — water — and see how you can support their work at a reception from 430-630PM.
Capital Dance Project: Join the CDP artists at Punch Bowl Social Sacramento for happy hour, with 20% of all food and drink purchases made venue-wide going to CDP's efforts to make dance accessible to everyone in our community. For every $5 raised, CDP will be able to send an individual living with autism to their first live dance performance. For every $25 raised, CDP can send an aspiring student with limited or no access to the arts to our performance of "Behind the Barre" for free! 4-7PM. No cover.
Under One Roof: 909 12th Street Open House: 909 12th Street is home to a dozen non-profits, all #UnderOneRoofSac, While we focus on areas from food access to climate change, affordable housing to clean air, together we share a vision for a better world and a better Sacramento. Nonprofits at 909 12th Street that are participating in the Big Day of Giving include: Sacramento Area Bicycle Advocates, Breathe California Sacramento Region, Sacramento Housing Alliance, Alchemist Community Development Corporation, 350 Sacramento, and Sierra Club Inspiring Connections Outdoors, Sacramento. Learn more about each organization; and enjoy food, wine and music. 3-6PM. Donations encouraged!
Concert for Youth Education & Nature: Enjoy local tunes from the Taylor Chicks in a casual outdoor environment and celebrate the work of local nonprofits with the Sacramento Valley Conservancy at Camp Pollock. 530-8PM.
PNDA Kamayan Dinner: Support Philppine National Day Association, and enjoy great food and no silverware! Kamayan, in Tagalog means "with hands". In the Philippines, Kamayan was a customary way of eating before the Spanish colonization in the 16th century. Obviously, utensils and plates are more accessible and common now but this old school way is often used for big celebrations and paying homage to culture. At Bistro Filipino. 6-830PM. $40 and up.
