Support for Protest Actions in Sacramento and Beyond

What’s Up Sac is Rooting for Everybody Black. 

What’s Up Sac is pivoting to support the protesters who are marching in solidarity with Minneapolis and in support of the Movement 4 Black Lives. In Sacramento, these protests have been largely peaceful, with some looting and destruction after dark. Regardless, we believe the right of the people to peaceably assemble should not be infringed upon or impeded, and we honor the commitment of individuals willing to put their bodies on the front lines for black liberation. To that end, today’s newsletter is focused on providing links to organizations and individuals who are organizing, protesting, and leading change in our community.  Please share this newsletter with your friends, family, and colleagues. 

Black Lives Matter: Allies Unite: This is an inclusive safe and shame free community space for ongoing dialogue for People of Color and Allies to unite and engage in thoughtful and meaningful conversations in all things that are race and #BLM related.

In the Spirit of Stonewall Fundraiser - The Gender Health Center and Sacramento LGBT Center are raising relief funds for community members most economically impacted by COVID-19 including people of color, trans and non-binary folks, asylum seeking and undocumented folks, and those ineligible to receive a stimulus relief check.

Big Day of Giving 2020

Today’s What’s Up Sac is dedicated to the Big Day of Giving, the Sacramento region’s effort to bring awareness and financial support to the large network of nonprofit organizations that support all aspects of Sacramento’s quality of life. For 24 hours, Sacramento attempts to raise as much money as possible for participating nonprofits. While all organizations are worthy of support, we are providing a list of events and organizations whose work we like and believe would be worthy of your donations. The May selection for the Adult Book Group is How Much of These Hills is Gold by C. Pam Zhang, an electric debut novel set against the twilight of the American gold rush, where two siblings are on the run in an unforgiving landscape - trying not just to survive but to find a home. Another 1st Friday is upon us and we still cannot attend galleries openings or visit with our favorite artists in their open studios, but we surely can still buy art!

National Day of Silence 2020 - Breaking the Silence: Started in the mid 90’s by two college students, the Day of Silence has expanded to reach hundreds of thousands of students each year. Every April, students go through the school day without speaking, ending the day with #BreakingtheSilence to share their experiences during the protest and bring attention to ways their schools and communities can become more inclusive. This year, the day of action is going virtual, with a “Know Your Rights” seminar, silent games led by the Sacramento LGBT Center Youth Advocate, Kyle Sewel, a virtual dance party, and morel. 11AM-6PM.
