How to test a quantum processor

Jerry Chow, IBM Fellow and Director of Quantum Systems, walks us through the IBM Quantum characterization lab, where quantum chips – like Falcon and Heron – and the systems that power them are tested before deployment. In this tour, Chow shows us the evolution of the underlying system technology that allows researchers to accurately test and scale #quantum processor performance. We also visit quantum researcher Daniela Bogorin for an introduction of the ultra-cold (15 millikelvin) dilution refrigerator where she and her team can accurately capture quantum processor key performance indicators – like qubit frequency, qubit coherence and flux coupler tuning, among others – to determine readiness for client system deployment.

How to test a new AI chip

So your team of semiconductor researchers have designed and built a brand new type of chip that has the potential to be far more efficient for AI computations. But how do they test that it actually works like they intended? That’s where IBM Research Hardware Engineer JohnDavid Lancaster comes in. In this behind-the-scenes look at his lab in Yorktown Heights, he demonstrates his team tests and validates the “power budget” — a “wattage-to-inference” ratio — of IBM’s latest AIU (Artificial Intelligence Unit) chips, which were specifically designed and optimized for AI applications. “One of the key reasons you would use our AIU card is the super low power for how many inferences you’re able to compute.” Lancaster shows how mapping the voltage of the entire card can ultimately help inform sustainable (low-power) encoder and decoder model design.

What you can only see under a scanning electron microscope

Have you ever wondered what a blade of grass looks like up close? Or did you know that there’s actually a statue of Abraham Lincoln on the U.S. penny? With scanning electron microscopes (SEMs), you see down to this minute level. Come explore our lab at IBM Research where we use SEMs so accurate that they use beams of electrons to create images of objects 50,000 times smaller than what we can see with our eyes. We use these machines for inspecting tiny imperfections on designs of microchips we’re creating for the future of semiconductors. Tag along as John Ott, a materials researcher at IBM who manages our SEMs at our Yorktown research center, tours one of the labs — and shows us that tiny Lincoln.
