Genuinely, you have to be so wary of fandom discord servers and attempts to recruit you to them. The promise of a more personal environment draws you in, but forget not the crucial thing: on tumblr we are all peasants. No one here has more power than anyone else. There is no ACTUAL fandom police! There is no ban hammer.
Versus on discord, suddenly a fandom has a little Royal Family. The server owner and their appointed mods. By their laws must thee obey! People that can and will remove you from the fandom if they dislike you enough. Be FUCKING WARY of yourself being recruited from a site where you are equal, to one where someone else controls participation. Where the threat of being banned exists. Why do they want you there? What's so much better about discord? All they do is make themselves more work, in creating a group they have to moderate.
It's the fucking control, dude. It's the fact that discord has infrastructure for control, and tumblr doesn't. And some people are attracted like flies to power structures, and to the opportunity to entrench themselves within them.
I DETEST attempts to move fandom into private spaces. This is not a private thing! This is a public activity, in a public fucking space. No one except tumblr's user guidelines can throw you out of here. You are not beholden to the whims of a mod. Your blog is entirely yours.
Currently, discord and tumblr exist side by side. But people do actively chase new fans and recruit them for servers, so that when they get established in the fandom, THAT is where they make their roots. I see recruitment whenever I go in the tags. I have been invited to discord servers several times. Despite how abrasive and impersonable I am; I suspect it is a deliberate attempt to move artists and writers, because we are a large part of the "draw" for other users.
But it would be moving from a free space to a space that has "fandom police" quite literally BUILT IN. Be careful with attempts to privatize you. There's no profit motive here, but some people want influence above all else. And the more people use Their Space, the more influence (control) they have.
What's wrong with tumblr? Power users can't control it. You can't be important here. There's no mods here. There's no power here. Don't leave that behind, and I advise you be suspect of people who want you to.
