It's been quite some time since I've reblogged even the most addictive of GIFs on Tumblr, but this time I'm revisiting the blog for a great cause.
On December 1, I started a charity with the help of 30+ friends. The purpose of this charity was to raise money for breast cancer education and more importantly, advocate for change. Change in the way we discuss the epidemic, view the epidemic, and approach different factors that cause breast cancer.
I've had a first hand experience of my mother, grandmother and great grandmother all suffering with breast cancer. Breast cancer is not pretty and pink. It's not about "fighting harder" to gain the upper hand on the disease. Breast cancer is truly disastrous, gut-wrenching, cruel, and a sometimes lonely experience. It's the exact reason we avoided starting this campaign in October.
So, here we are, 6 weeks down with 2 weeks to go. We've far surpassed our initial goal of $10k (in just 10 days I might add) and we've amassed 60 participants. People care. People are genuinely interested in what we're doing even though a lot of them don't know us. But, it's very likely that our voice wouldn't have been so loud if we didn't have a platform such as Causevox to carry that sound for us.
Causevox is a crowdfunding platform, but unlike those all-so-popular platforms we visit to fund a clever little smartwatch or artisanal logs. Causevox's focus skews much more donation-based than product funding. Therefor all money goes directly to the charity of my choice thanks to Causevox's Paypal and Stripe integration. In this case, we chose Breast Cancer Action, a foundation that has a reputation for responding fearlessly to critical issues in the fight against breast cancer.
On top of its wonderful donation system, Causevox's organizational tools are extremely intuitive. I've been able to organize and direct 60 participants and their accounts with ease. I specifically looked for platforms that could handle the task of housing so many people and this was the very best option out there.
My hope is Causevox will release functionality to edit CSS or HTML soon, as that seemed to be the only factor remaining that I would have liked to have complete control over. Once they have that settled, you will undoubtedly hear about this platform much more often.
Thank you to Causevox for offering us a platform to be heard. Thank you to our donors, family and friends for your support. Here's to all of those trying to make a change for the better.
