HOW TO NOT BE STUDENT? help
OH MY GOD um well. The things I most needed to learn:
You don’t have to have one job for the rest of your life. Whatever you pick now should pay the bills/be somewhat interesting/allow you to sleep if possible, but it doesn’t have to be your perfect job. Even if you’re stuck behind a counter, you can be writing stories in your head and developing persistence and learning confidence in crazy customer situations.
College provides a lot of people interaction, but after that your twenties can be lonely. People move around a lot. Take a class, join a fandom, text somebody. You will find your people in time.
Try to make yourself one thing to eat every day. Make tea. Make an omelette. Make a toasted cheese sandwich with tomato. Making food is one of the great pleasures of post-school life and it makes me feel calmer and more capable.
Thrift stores are awesome if you have your own room/apartment/etc. for the first time and have no idea how to actually furnish it on your tiny or nonexistent salary. So are dollar stores and garage sales and roadside pickup days. And you end up with a more interesting home. Same goes for your bookshelf and your wardrobe.
Do apply for food and medical insurance assistance if you need it and it’s available. We inherited a genuinely awful economy. The help’s there for a reason.
If you’re going to splurge, splurge on experiences. Studies show a roadtrip or a theater night contribute more to happiness than stuff does.
If you’re used to staying up late studying/talking at college and need help sleeping earlier at night, try putting out most of the lights an hour before bed (helps with melatonin production) and cutting out coffee past lunchtime. And even if you’re still awake, just lying there with your eyes closed still rests your mind.
If you’re anxious/depressed from all the change (not to the point of needing meds, just run-of-the-mill bad feelings) fresh air, drinking water, deep slow breathing, meditation apps and dancing/yoga/stretching all really do help. Do one thing to bring you back into your body and the present moment. Don’t be afraid to sit with bad feelings. Don’t be afraid to tell a friend you’re scared.
It’s okay if you can’t do the stuff on this list. It’s okay if you skip the laundry and forget to pay bills and cry over your taxes. It’s okay to learn slowly. Everyone is.
All you have to do is love yourself and the people around you as well as you can, and you’ll be a successful adult.
