So! It seems my silly beastman!Kamina verse got named "Ascendant" while I was away! It's an AU of Gurren Lagaan, where Viral decides that Kamina has far too much potential and drags him home instead of trying to kill him. This changes many many things. Cockatoo writes about it here.

Except the drop didn't seem to register to Kamina. He ran down the narrowing beam, sure footed and accelerating as the path fragmented into spires, laughing as he leapt. Eyes fixed forward and arms spread wide for balance and pivoting as if to display that ridiculous cape he'd left behind, defiantly taunting gravity.
In the flickering lights his shadow seemed to wear it anyway. Although…
Viral's breath caught as Kamina made one last hop to safety, threw his face to the ceiling and crowed in delight…
…and behind him his shadow flared into magnificent wings.
