Got really into Harry/Carlos after watching descendants 1 and 2 so have a lil idea (not that I think there are a lot of people who ship this, but who cares)
---
It's in Remedial Goodness that Fairy Godmother asks "what is love ? In actions, in moments, what is love for you ?".
All she gets is four genuinely befuddled stares.
(she probably should have expected this)
"as an example, one student in my philosophy class told me that love was that time he was very sick and his father and mother stayed at his side without faltering until he recovered."
That does not get her any more understanding. If anything, the confusion is now tinged with disdain. Mal raises an eyebrow that speaks all the sarcasm she isn't voicing.
She resists the urge to sigh. A teacher has to be patient.
"Well... What about a moment where someone has made you feel you were important to them?"
There. She does not think it clearly encompasses the scope of what love can be, but one has to start small.
She gets more of a reaction this time. Evie and Carlos nod, Mal furrows her brows, and Jay crosses his arms. They all simultaneously appear to fall into deep thinking, eyes drifting to the ceiling or the floor or the windows.
(She would never admit it out loud, because they would definitely take offense, but she thinks the way they're so in synch is dreadfully cute.)
Carlos makes a noise that his friends would identify as the "eureka" noise.
He does not raises his hand, just immediately starts speaking (Fairy Godmother lets it go, she figures he's just excited about getting an answer first).
"Once..." he starts, his face tinged with a deep fondness that Fairy Godmother has only seen on him once (he was looking at his friends bickering and hadn't noticed her watching. But all traces of emotion left his face once he did). "Harry said he would kill my mother for me one day."
(his friends' reactions can be summarized as "holy shit", "wait, really ?" and "so when's the wedding ?")
(Fairy Godmother's reaction, however, is more along the lines of "excuse me?" which she feels is a perfectly normal reaction)
She forces herself to smile, suddenly understanding the sheer bewilderment she inflicted upon her students at the beginning of the lesson. The tables have turned, it seems. This must be the cultural shock she knew would come.
"Is that how you see love, dear?"
Carlos turns wide eyes on her. His puppy eyes are surprisingly effective given she knows he just yesterday got detention for taking apart someone's computer (he put it back together very fast, but still).
"I mean, yeah?"
What can she say to that.
Not that she needs to, apparently, because his friends seem happy to do the talking for her.
Evie leans towards him (not that she has to lean very far. Their chairs are almost touching), a teasing smile on her face. "And what did you saaaay?"
Carlos blinks at her, visibly confused. "I mean, I kissed him?" he says, looking very much like someone who's restraining himself from adding a 'duh' as ponctuation. "Obviously." never mind about that restraint.
Evie makes a noise that is part fondness, part frustration (she very obviously has forgotten Fairy Godmother's presence in favor of teasing her friend. She's glad. It's nice to see Evie loosening up a bit).
Jay, on Carlos' other side, leans on his desk so as to look at both his friends. "She means what did you say to the proposal, puppy."
Carlos wrinkles his nose at the nickname but doesn't protest, probably used to it. "I said maybe. You know it's complicated with her, and I'm also a bit worried about him if he doesn't succeed."
(Fairy Godmother is glad they're at ease in her presence but are they really discussing murder in her Remedial Goodness class? She gets the feeling they'll be needing the class for a while)
Jay wiggles his eyebrows. "so it's a maybe on the murder, and...?"
What more is there? She should probably start talking about the murder thing.
"and a yes on the proposal," Carlos finishes, a gentle smile blooming on his face.
Pardon?
"What proposal?" Fairy Godmother manages, gobsmacked by the direction her class took.
Evie, seemingly not having heard her, makes a noise of pure joy and yanks Carlos into a side hug.
Mal puts her face in her hands and sighs so deep it must come from her soul.
Jay makes a face that she can tell is a mix between "happy for you" and "that one, really??"
"the marriage proposal?" Carlos says, tilting his head to the side.
It's her turn to blink in confusion. "how can an offer of murder possibly correlate to a proposal? And we will talk about how murder is never the solution much less a romantic act later, my dears."
(this elicits various noises of dismay in the classroom. Well she's feeling very dismayed herself, so that's only fair)
Evie nods. "I mean, doing such a big thing for someone without asking for anything back... It wouldn't be a proposal coming from everyone, but coming from Harry..."
(there is a brief exchange where Fairy Godmother asks just who this Harry is and gets her answer)
"I bet you swooned so hard," Jay laughs, visibly not having gotten all the teasing out of his system.
"did not," Carlos growls, crossing his arms. It's a surprisingly intimidating growl coming from such a sweet face.
Evie pats his shoulder. "I'm sorry love but there's no denying it. Don't worry, I would have swooned too if someone proposed to me like that."
Mal has not raised her face from her hands. Fairy Godmother can hear a faint can't believe I'm going to be sister-in-law with Uma.
This has not reassured Fairy Godmother about her students' morals in the least. In fact, she's more worried than before. But, looking at Mal's hidden smile, Jay's arm around Carlos' shoulders paralleling Evie's arm around his waist, Carlos' fond eyes even as he endures his friends' teasing and his sunny smile as he talks about his... Fiancé, apparently... At least she knows they all do know what love is like.
