This is sometime in the Belle Epoque? 1890s? I think that was peak time for circuses in Europe.
“Hey hey hey wait you don’t wanna do that!”
They put the hot poker down. It slid into the water and hissed out steam.
“Get me your boss. Hmm? I have information for him. You guys had a cat right? A beast kid. Little guy. Jaguar. I know where he is.”
Kaz might be a charlatan, but even he had lines he didn’t cross. Growing up in the slums he’d seen it all. Two of the things he refused to engage with were animal cruelty and human trafficking, so selling out a beastman was not the top of his list per se, but it was him or Kaz at this point. A lifeline. Live to fight another day.
Their boss appeared. He didn’t look happy. He picked up the hot poker and eyed it, turning it over in his hands.
“Give me one good reason why I should believe you.”
He placed it back in the coals.
“You’re a common thief. A cheat,” he smiled sarcastically, “and you owe me 150 francs*.”
The poker was glowing red. Kaz was sweating under his clothes. If only he perfected the straight jacket escape. I just have to dislocate my shoulder. Easy. Focus.
“You already do. See I’m guessing you lost the boy in Moscow. Oh, I’m right aren’t I? You didn’t realize what you had. You were looking to get robbed. Now it’s been what, ten years? He’s not a kid. Beasts grow fast. He got his adult spots. Different coat. Different identifiers. I bet people have been claiming they found him. I got a young jaguar right here, sir! And it’s not the one. Some poor soul from somewhere else dressed up to look like him. Some of them not even jaguars. But I know the secret. Blue eyes. Rare eyes. He’s probably smaller in size too. Because the real secret. The poor kid is half human.
The man was paying attention now.
“See you’ve been looking for the wrong beastman. I’ve seen him. He’s right here in Berlin.”
Silence. Kaz had played all his chips. Call it.
“Untie Mr. Miller but keep him cuffed. He’s our newest member. He can work off his debt starting today.”
I named the wolf children! This is for my beastman!KRS Au
I'm using the manwha for descriptors of said children. I'm guessing on ages btw.

Sebek was, and still is, a really ambitious student. That ambitious, that one may say he's the biggest crocodile nerd one could ever be.
Yet the difference between Sebek and your average nerd was that Sebek learned for the sake of his future... For the sake of his position as a knight and for the sake of proving to his beloved Wakasama that he is a smart and cunning knight, fit to protect the prince from the Valery of thorns. After all, his mentor, Lilia, did say that for a great warrior, you need both strength and mind. That fae was, after all, someone who saw things and lived enough to hold wisdom Sebek only dreamed of.
Tail swishing in annoyance, Sebek was furrowing as he was revising, under a tree in the courtyard, a paragraph from his notes taken during Trein's class. Lucius distracted him enough so he could miss a small detail in the lecture, making half of the lesson to seem like it had no sense whatsoever. Sebek was hating that cat. Oh how much he would want to chop it in half.
Sebek hated cats! They only want attention, which Sebek couldn't spare!
Funny enough, Sebek was revising over the beastmen civilization and the very first clues of their culture and existence. While he had an incredible knowledge over fae culture and history, Sebek was clueless over the beastman culture.
Which was ironic, knowing how his own father was a beastman. A crocodile beastman from the swamps area that was also a dentist. His mother was a fae, a beautiful and powerful woman on top of that, with some strong Jaws that one may compare her to a croc's or even shark's Jaws. His father was so curious and enchanted by her Jaws and she was so bewitched by the beastman's attics and unique appearance that they started a wacky romance, resulting in this outcome.
Sebek did not even question or ask about his beastman heritage, although... It was quite present, if not, possibly more than the Fae one. Even if Sebek denied it with all his might. Sure, having patches of scales, a long tail, golden reptile eyes and some killer jaw power were advantages and at the same time disadvantages.
Maybe Sebek shouldn't be that satly about it. But he still is, because Sebek is also really petty. He wouldn't admit defeat unless the whole universe and his wakasama dictates it. Otherwise it will be him against the whole world 24/24.
"What'cha doing, Sebek?" A voice piped in above him. Sebek looked, annoyed at the red feline eyes that looked down upon him and the mischievous smile the one who asked had.
"Get lost, cat..." the crocodile boy said, tail again giving another cut through the air. "Why? It's so nice in here~" Ace, the one who was asking, said as he stretched a bit on the tree branch he chose. Unlike Lucius, Ace was a beastman cat. Still as annoying as a cat could be, the Persian cat was always prone to make problems. He may look as fluffy and as innocent as one may be, but even the fox nor the snake could compare to Ace's mischief.
Sebek groaned, gripping his magic pen and throwing a spell towards the branch, shaking it and getting Ace down, although a bit unceremoniously. Thankfully, the feline instincts avoided an ungraceful fall for the ginger.
Despite being a beastman, Ace was like any other cat: unable to get off trees so easily. The ginger would hang in there for hours until he finally would jump down. It was a matter that Sebek never understood. "That was rude... I could have gotten down myself for your information..." Ace puffed. "Mhm..." Sebek drifted his attention back to his notes and books he had. He needed to fill in the blanks from his notes.
"Aww man... Silent treatment? What did I do, crocy?" Sebek grunted as he felt the fluffy tail, specific of a Persian cat, brushing a bit against his scaly cheek. It tickled! Ace frowned at the lack of attention he received from the other. He could get anyone else's attention easily, yet Ace wanted only his boyfriend's attention.
"Sebek~ come on... What's troubling ya?" Ace continued to Pester the said crocodile. Weather by soft brushings or gentle pokes, Ace was trying everything and anything to get the other's attention.
Sebek, on the other hand, was growing irritated. His left eye already was starting to twitch by the time Ace resulted to only poking his shoulder and calling his name.
"oh... What is this?" Ace mumbled as he grabbed one of Sebek's books. It was a really old book that he got it from the library. At this, the crocodile snapped his head towards the cat who was skimming through the book with a big speed. Sebek knew that Ace would scratch the book to get his attention.
"HANDS OFF THE BOOK, CAT!" The crocodile yelled, gripping on the book with both hands and yanking it off Ace's grip, making a ripping sound. Panicky looking at the object, Sebek skimmed through it.
A few pages were torn. Claw marks were visible on them as well as on the cover.
Sebek's pipils became so slim one could bearly see them. "S-" Ace started, raising his palms that clearly had no claws to it. Sebek clenched his teeth. "It's your fault! YOU BROKE A LIBRARY BOOK!" "I-I can fix i-" "NO YOU CAN'T! GET LOST, CAT! I DON'T WANT TO SEE YOU!" Sebek yelled, this time his jaws showing on full display, tail swishing angrily.
Ace's ears went flat against his head as his tail in between his legs. "Alright... I guess... Just take your lame ribbon anyway!" The ginger mumbled, as he angrly threw on the ground something before leaving with an angry swish of tail and hands in his pockets.
Sebek took in a deep breath and continued his revising with a puff, yet he felt a wierd sensation at his fingers. Maybe he should ask Lilia to help him fix it. Sebek felt ashamed for attempting to steal away his mentor's precious time with such a matter.
Curiosity itched onto Sebek as he looked at the ground, where Ace threw angrily the said object. It was a piece of red fabric. Grabbing it, Sebek saw that it was half black, half red. A thick long ribbon.
It was the ribbon Sebek himself gifted to Ace on their first date. At that time Riddle insisted that Ace must wear something to let his presence be known so he gave him a bell. For that, Sebek gifted to the ginger a ribbon to tie the bell wherever Ace desired. At first, Some days he wore it like a bracelet, otherwise tied to his tail to just swish it around and annoy people with the jingling by moving his limbs.
Hence, Riddle and the others decided that it was best if Ace wore it around his neck. So he wouldn't flap of swing the bell anymore and annoy everyone beyond limit. Problem was, Ace never was great with tying it. So he always needed someone to tie it for him.
And Ace always came to Sebek for this matter. It didn't take long since Sebek had a good hand at making knots. It would take less than a minute and then Ace would either hang around him quietly or leave to his own business. Ace never let anyone to tie his ribbon besides Sebek. It was something the ginger took great pride in and always liked to faunt his bows Sebek made around his neck with the said ribbon.
Ace just wanted Sebek to tie his ribbon.
Looking at his hands, Sebek saw his claws. On his perfectly sharpened claws, residues of old paper were found. Sebek realised, much to his horror, that he was the one responsible for the book being scratched. Ace had retractable claws. And he never got them out their entire conversation. Sebek was the one who scratched it and knowing how Ace was prone to destroy unsinifigant little things like twigs or small cramped papers to catch his attention, Sebek assumed that Ace's intention was to scratch the book.
All this time... Sebek was at fault. He felt bad for accusing his own boyfriend, who came at him with a trivial matter that would have been solved if only Sebek spared a few seconds.
But Sebek's hate onto Lucius's attics and other cats made him to let out his rage onto Ace. Sebek just associated the persian cat beastman with the annoying cat the history professor had.
He messed up big time.
So hurriedly grabbing his books, Sebek went directly to diasomnia to leave them in there. Luckily, just then an explosion occurred into the kitchen, a sign of another void reject food being born, but also that Lilia was in the dorm.
"LILIA-SAMA! I'm in dire need of your aid!" Sebek scrambled to his mentor. "oh.. Sebek? What is it, dear?" "I need to fix this library book..." the Fae only gently patted the head of the boy as he got the book with magic. "My my... You seem quite down, child... What happened?" setting gently himself on the lounge couch and dragging Sebek's upper body in his lap, Lilia gently caressed the green locks of the crocodile beastman.
"I... Made a grave mistake..." "What did you do, child?" Lilia asked sweetly as he was twirling a finger of his, sparkles following it as the book was fixing itself. "I shouted at Ace and accused him of something he didn't do..." Sebek confessed.
At this, Lilia slapped Sebek over his tail, making the crocodile to yelp. "You brat... I taught you better than that..." the Fae nagged. "You go this instant to your boyfriend and apologise! I do not want to see your face until you give him a proper apology!" Lilia shooed Sebek out of the dorm, harshly slamming the doors behind him.
Lilia raised no idiots. Lilia most certainly raised no disrespectful men. Sebek had to apologise and the Fae made it clear.
Ace, on the other hand, was in a tree, again, pawing at the leaves from it. This time he was in his own dorm, bored out of his mind. His tail was plopped, hanging like a loose rope as his ears bearly twitched. Not even Deuce, the clumsy bird, helped his mood at all. Riddle did screech after him for a few minutes, yet Ace payed no mind. The redhead anyway leaved to his own work.
"Ace..." A voice mused, gaining a perk from the ginger's ears. Looking down, he could see Sebek, tail in between his legs and hands awkwardly linked together in front of him like a child who was facing their angry mom.
"Get lost, crocodile... You said you don't want to see me anymore..." The Persian cat mumbled annoyed as his tail swished from Sebek's reach.
Sebek didn't take this for a response. He had to apologise properly.
Ace suddenly felt the tree shaking. The ginger hugged the branch and looked behind him at Sebek who finally reached the cat. The ginger felt a scaly surface gently brushing his cheek as he was dragged in a somewhat hug.
Crocodiles can climb trees... And unfortunately for Ace, Sebek was a great climber.
"I apologise..." Sebek mumbled, nuzzling his face into the orange hair of the other. "For accusing you of breaking the book." "Yeah yeah... I got the memo... You hate cats..." Ace grumbled.
At one point, the cat beastman felt something soft around his neck. Looking down, he saw that the bell was finally attached to his neck, through the black and red ribbon. "thanks... I guess..." The ginger mumbled, still keeping the coldness towards the other. Reptiles were cold-blooded creatures unfortunately, so Sebek failed to see that.
"Can you forgive me?" "Maybe..." Ace mused as he was melting to the gentle caressing of the other. Soft purrs came from him. "So you forgive me..." "N-no! *purrrrr* I-I most certainly do not! *purrrrrrrrrrrr*" The ginger groaned. "Your purring says otherwise." Ace only puffed his cheeks, ears plopped and tail waving annoyingly. Sebek liked it though. The long ginger fluffy tail that was intertwining clumsily with his crocodile one. Ace was warm while he was cold, so together they had the perfect ambient.
"Ace..." "Hmm?" "I hate cats..." "I know..." "But Persian cats are an exception..." "Awwww... I love you too, you big crocodile!" after that, soft snored filled the air from both of the boys.
Except... In the morning...
"ACE TRAPPOLA! GET DOWN HERE THIS INSTANT!" Riddle's screech woke up the two boys, making them to fall out of the tree with the branch and all. Sebek could only groan, Ace being surprisingly light compared to him.
Oh yes... Cats aren't allowed to sleep on the trees on Fridays and Saturdays. And today was Friday!
Sebek groaned as the ginger helped him to get up. They should have been more mindful of the rules when sleeping at Heartslabyul.
