• Carl Solomon… several years after we were locked up together in residence on sixth floor ward, New York State Psychiatric Institute. He got shock treatments, introduced me to Jean Genet & Antonin Artaud texts, I stayed eight months, weekends out. Afterwards working mid-town at his uncle’s Ace Books Publishers, he edited William Burroughs’ Junkie paperback first edition. (photo & caption: Allen Ginsberg) • Carl Solomon, here snapped by Allen while on a fishing outing just up the street from Carl’s apartment in Pelham Bay, Bronx, September 1985. The two first met in 1949 at New York State Psychiatric Institute as Carl, coming out of Insulin shock treatment, introduced himself as Kirilov, protagonist of Dostoyevky’s “Possessed,” to which Allen, not missing a beat,  replied ’I’m Myshkin’,  protagonist of Dostoyevky’s ”Idiot.”  Remaining close friends ever since, Allen dedicated Howl to him, towards which Carl had mixed feelings at best. A word on the Politicians:  my poetry is Angelical Ravings, and has nothing to do with dull materialistic vagaries about who should shoot who. The secrets of individual imagination – which are transconceptual and non-verbal – I mean Unconditional Spirit – are not for sale to this consciousness, are no use to this world, except perhaps to make it shut its trap and listen to the Spheres.  Who denies the music of the spheres denies poetry, denies man, and spits on Blake, Shelley, Christ and Buddha. Meanwhile have a ball.  The universe is a new flower. America will be discovered. Who wants a war against roses will have it. Fate tells big lies, and the gay Creator dances on his own body in Eternity.
