Those who watch Abbott Elementary get it
I really loved the new Frankenstein film but the fact that it ends with a quote from Lord Byron does not sit well with me.
Like yes, of course, it was at that clandestine party of his that an 18 year old girl revolutionized literature by giving birth to a whole new genre. I acknowledge that.
But that’s a fun fact. It’s not important at all to the actual work. Why is it that every time we talk about Frankenstein the men who were literally just in the same room have to be mentioned in the same breath? It’s not like Mary Shelley died before she revealed she wrote it. We have PLENTY of quotes from her about the processes of writing it and reflections on the work.
Why did a film that did such an exceptional job at reenforcing the idea that women represent creation have to tie Byron as a part of its creation?
Mary Shelley wrote a story about a twisted version of creation where it all goes wrong —something with yellow eyes staring at you in the night—while grieving her own miscarriage. Something tackling not only the science and social matters of her day, but can and has been interpreted to explore postpartum depression, the weight and responsibility of parenthood, and the mixed feelings/horror of what you’ve created.
What the fuck does Lord Bryon have to do with any of that?
