I don't think many understand that Beau is Afraid could 100% be seen as an allegory for sexual abuse involving inc-st. Mf the shit his mother tells him when he's younger, the way she makes him feel like she's jealous of the crush he has on Elaine, because she actually is. I understand that most people see it only from face value and see it as a movie about anxiety or even OCD but I am begging y'all to dig deeper and to seriously consider why you didn't see this movie as an allegory about CSA.
It's normalized for mothers to say "my son is my man" or "my boy is gonna be a heart breaker." When women are predators, nothing fucking gets done. Because the boys being abused do not have the language to describe this. Beau did not have the language to describe the things his mother was putting into his head, he didn't have the language to explain that she was genuinely fucking with him and guilt tripping him in an extreme amount.
The entire movie is meant to be seen as that Beau keeps digging himself into a deeper hole and that his mother is the real victim (not to the audience but to the characters he interacts with). Even at the end when we see that she bought the neighborhood he was in.
I feel like this could specifically be seen as having your abuser/rapist control the narrative. You're the crazy one. You're the one overreacting. Or you are the aggressor in this situation.
Sorry for the rant I am genuinely just like 🤔 with this movie now.
