Hot Take: People Got Sweet Mask Backwards (Webcomic Spoilers)
People say that Sweet Mask "turned into a monster" to defeat Pesky Clown.
I think that's inaccurate.
Wearing his "human" face, Beauto was gonna let those civilians twist in the wind.
When he was a "monster", he came back for them, even if it meant risking his life, torching his legacy, and losing his human rights forever. :(
So it sorta grinds my gears when people call this form his "monster form". It's anything but that; wearing that ugly face, he performed an act of grace, courage, and love that can only be classified as heroic.
This one's the monster. Being handsome on the outside doesn't make this form human.
He may be uglier, but this guy is the one with the human heart.
And as long as your heart is human, you will always be a fine human.
Amai mask: raise your hands up if you like me!
Zombieman: and if we dont like you?
Amai mask: then raise your standards bitch wtf

Amai Mask and Garou are different cases from everything that is told to us. This is why the Genus theory doesn't apply to them. They aren't characters struggling to keep their humanity, they are characters who feel they are different from society. The idea that they are monsters is only in their head, this is because society branded them as monsters. They are generally outcasts. Why would Beaut be weakened if he is fighting for the right cause? He didn't do anything wrong, he saved those people.
Yes and no. No analogies are perfect, but let’s see if this one is helpful. Think of monsterisation as something like alcoholism. Most people who become monsters, they’re at a point where they’ve accepted that they’re alcoholics and have leaned fully into it: they’re going to drink and damn what happens. Folk like Beauto and Garou, they’re still alcoholics, but they really want to sober up permanently. And that’s as far as I’m carrying this analogy.
Wouldn’t it be nice if the crowds looked at Amai Mask, gasped, thought about it for a moment, and then cried ‘even if you look a little weird, you’re still our Sweet Mask!’ Cue swelling music, confetti from nowhere and everyone going off into the setting sun. But the people of OPM know something that we don’t: there’s no permanent accommodation to be made with a monster. The fact that ‘Sweet Mask’ here and now can still act on the behalf of people is no assurance at all that he won’t start killing people himself in the future.
the crowd is very aware of the difference between ‘saved’ and ‘saved for later’
Sweet Mask knows it for himself: he tried to live with being a monster and tried leveraging the power and looks that came with it to the good.
But he’s honest enough and smart enough not to lie to himself: he’s still being corrupted. He knows that he’s losing his humanity, that his professing of justice means less and less, that he no longer sees people as individuals, but things to be preserved as best possible, expediency permitting.
The manga has shown us quite adequately that he’s not joking about this.
There is no accommodation to be made with a monster. Let me repeat that: there is no accommodation to be made with a monster. Sweet Mask tried it -- it just kept eating him.
What Saitama has given Beauto is not the chance to live better as a monster, but rather to reclaim all his humanity.
Again, no package deals. Beauto was a reasonably strong person (or he’d not have gotten into the Hero Association) who became crazy strong as a result of becoming a monster. If he saves his humanity, he’ll be back to where he started before he started going wrong. And that’s no bad thing: he can become much stronger as a human being.
Cont. Garou became weak because his desire became weak. It served no point to become a monster when he doesn't want to be one. The only problem Beaut has is his appearance because his desire to help people is strong. This is why he isn't going to come back weak, he will come back strong. There is nothing wrong with him, he just needs to accept himself. How disappointing that he is written off like that. He is an advocate of change, he will change the "norm".That is his character, remember that.
Written Beauto off? Perish the thought! I say and continue to say that Amai Mask is dead. Amai Mask is the beautiful, yet monstrous visage that Beauto hid behind. Dead, finished, gone, rest in pieces, rot in hell.
ONE doesn’t do package deals: whatever you didn’t work for, you don’t get. Beauto will have to discover strength anew as a human, not as a monster. All the power that came from being a monster will be gone.
But that’s no bad thing. As Saitama puts it, ‘humans are strong because we can change ourselves.’ Having the courage to start afresh is developing into one of the big themes in OPM.
I have every confidence that Beauto will be able to do just great.
