My first Ipsy, better than Birchbox?
Happy Sunday! What a weekend it has been. We took our kids to our favorite indoor waterpark to try to erase some of this winter weather from our minds. Now here we are with yet another winter weather advisory and the snow coming down like some kind of crazy snowglobe outside.
Let’s not think of it for a second longer and move on to something much more exciting. Like, what’s in my February Ipsy bag! I have been a Birchbox girl for quite some time now and recently switched to Ipsy. So I am sharing my take on the difference between these two services.
If you are not familiar with either, where have you been!? They are essentially a beauty subscription service. Each of them sends beauty products, often sample size once per month. It gives subscribers who love to try new things the opportunity to do so without the extra cost of buying full-size products.
You will get a range of items like makeup, hair products, fragrances, and skin care products in each bag. Most of them will be sample size which is great to try most products, you will also usually get one full-size product. In total each month both subscriptions send five product samples.
So let’s take a look at what was in my Ipsy bag for February. Ipsy ships their monthly goodies in cute bags that can be used as cosmetic bags or brush bags, really whatever you want.
First, the F.A.R.A.H brush which is a full-size makeup brush. The instructions say that this is great for powder or blush and I agree! I love this brush and used it to apply the glow-To Highlighter that was also in the bag. It has soft bristles and is light and airy, I noticed that it is great for making everything blend seamlessly together contour, highlighter, and blush. This is powder brush 50F.
Next, the glow-To Highlighter by Ciate in Moondust. I have been searching for a great highlighter to give that glow without being a white streak on my skin. I brushed this on my cheekbones, cupids bow and chin and it looks amazing.
TheBalm Cosmetics Alternative Rock Volume 1 eyeshadow in Take it for Granite is lovely. It’s sort of a shimmery purple that I used in the inside corner of my eye with a few matte shades of purple I already owned. I finished off that look with the Chella eyeliner pen. Sorry I still love my e.l.f eyeliner the best but this one is nice.
The last product was a Lab For You Multi-Ex Repair Cream. I stuck it in my overnight bag and used it while we were on our trip rather than bringing my usual arsenal of moisturizers and night creams. Even though I only used it at night and the next morning I could see a visible difference in the size of my pores and the way my skin felt. Hmmm, maybe switching to this when my Sunday Riley runs out.
In all, I was very impressed with Ipsy. The F.A.R.A.H brush was a big win and I loved every product they sent. Not to mention the cute makeup bag it came in is reusable. Birchbox sends their products in a colorful box that I don’t have much use for after I’ve taken out the products. I also noticed that Birchbox tended to send me a lot of lower quality creams, moisturizers, and products in general. Ipsy products are name brand and seem to be great quality. Last, I grew a little bored with the Birchbox products and saw a lot of repeats.
So, it is yet to be seen with Ipsy if the same will happen. Overall, I would say that Ipsy seems to fit what I am looking for, more makeup and less hair and skin products.
I would also note that Ipsy and Birchbox are the same monthly cost at the time of this post $10/month. Yet, when I totaled up the cost of the products in my Ipsy bag this month vs. my Birchbox the value is about three times as much.
